Certainly wouldn't call it a terrible signing. Yes it's not worked out but the fee is relatively small these days and if more than 50% is recouped then I'm fine with taking these types of risks and actual wish we'd do a lot more. Realistically for every 5 of these types of signings you only need 2 or 3 to work out. It's what Bournemouth, Brighton and Brentford currently do much better than us.

Do you have any idea just how much the weeds spend on transfers like that? They throw s*** at the wall and see what sticks, frequently jizzing 7 or 8 figures on unknowns and most of them, MOST, don't work out. They have Chelsea to thank for it, pretty much.

OG clearly didn't rate him. Came on & scored on his debut. No real game time after that & then the sub on sub off fiasco at Liverpool at the end of the season.

Was there a player there?? Who knows didn't pull up trees for Coventry & seemed to spend more time on the bench there than on the pitch. Plus preseason both him & JRS have looked awful

Limit the loss, sell on % & move on.

I’m probably a bit old fashioned and behind the times , but for you youngsters out there it used to be the case that a player could not agree terms with a prospective buying club until the prospective selling club had been given permission for the player to meet the club and the fee had been agreed.
Were a club to approach one of your players before such steps had been taken there could be redress on the charge of poaching or ‘tapping up.’
Not that Palace are any different these days with regard to agreeing terms with a player ahead of agreeing a fee with the club.

Exactly, and I wonder how true all these examples are of a player agreeing term before the buying club has even made conact with the seller. Anyway, regardless of protokoll, I wouldn't say that we ruined him. if anything he contributed to that himself with his attitude if reports are to be believed. Recoup some cash and let go, don't see any chance of game time. Unless of course Sarr is beoing sold 🙄

I agree completely. I think the issue Glasner had with him was the lad was poor at following instructions, thinking 'if I score a good goal that will all be forgotten'. Wrong. Not only did he not manager any more goals, even if he did Glasner is just not having someone who wont play within the structure of the team.
Seems like even Fat Frank realised this about him pretty quickly. No one doubts his talent. You need more than that these days

I think its still against all rules to speak to another club's player without permission but there is nothing to stop said player's representatives/agent talking informally to whoever they want.

True, and what happens if a club says no? It's straight to the media. Player unsettled etc.
The whole of football is broken due to the current contract and transfer model.

I remember those good times as well, but, it's not the 'buying' club that speaks to the player directly, they contact the agent or, the players 'people/camp' they in turn 'mention' it to the player. I'd be very surprised if a player 'agrees' personal terms, that'll be the agent doing that(as well as his terms).

I don't think he's worth keeping. He looked rubbish in friendlies against crap sides and so did Rak-Sakyi.

It certainly points in that direction. If, as the rumours say, he's agreed personal terms then it's a case of getting as much as we can for him from the Belgians who must have the money after the sale of their star and their regular European seasons. Will be interesting to see where the deal ends up. If talks are continuing there must be some wiggle room. I'll guess that we'll sell at !0m euros plus 2m in add-ons and a sell-on clause.

Who over the last few seasons have they spunked loads on and have then taken a big loss on when it didn't work out and they've moved them on?

Also 7 figures on an unknown I wouldn't even consider a big deal these days when Prem money is concerned.

As I said before, if you get a few of these types of transfers correct then the reward far outweighs the risk when you get a few young duds.

Sorloth was similar despite a horrific start, because time was on our side we still managed to get a fee back. It's why I can't understand when every now and then we decide to spend 30m plus on a player who has already gone through their 'youthful prospect' phase and therefore very unlikely to increase in value... And hence when it doesn't work out we're left with a player that adds little to the club but it's costing a fortune.

Terrible might be a too harsh a word, but he was certainly overpriced and from speaking with people who watched him in the championship no one though him to be potential premiership standard.

£12m increasing to £15m isn't to be sniffed at, even at today's crazy prices.

I agree, I watched most of his games for Coventry and he did not shine at all one level down, so I think it unlikely that he will break through at the top level. If I was him I’d be all over the Brugge move.

I reckon he should have been about £7m-£8m, JSL should have been about £10m cheaper and Johnson £15m cheaper. Thats an awful lot of money wasted on (so far) bang average players.
