Liddle often spoke of the ‘child abuse’ he suffered when aged 11 and living in Middlesbrough, he desperately begged his parents for a Millwall football kit for Christmas. His father bluntly told him, "Nobody sells that c**p. On Christmas morning, he raced downstairs and tore open a package that was clearly a football kit. To his ‘abject horror’, instead of the dark blue of Millwall, it was the kit of their bitter South London rivals, Crystal Palace. Seeing his son's shock, his dad in a subdued tone explained, "Nearest thing they had... no matter how hard we searched, we couldn't find a Millwall strip."
