Unlike the so called conservatives who talk a lot about being conservative but when in power just do Blairism and social liberalism (unless it's protecting banks and corporate)...Rupert Lowe has an actual petition out for Sarah Connolly that attacks this government's attitude to free speech and jailing people therein for it (unless it's their political mates).

I support those signing this petition who believe what has been done to this woman over a stupid tweet wildly disproportionate and political.

Any petition of this sort has zero chance of doing anything other than further winding up the already infuriated.

Connolly was jailed because of the serious consequences that could, and seemingly did, follow from promoting violence. That it was done in a social media post is besides the point.

So is that she has a family and a campaign that has painted her as an innocent, loving mother. How the prison authorities balance the competing needs of ensuring she serves her sentence with how her family is not unreasonably impacted is a matter for them. Not the judiciary. Arguing for an early release on compassionate grounds is reasonable. That she isn’t a criminal is not.

Crimes need to be both deterred and punished. All crimes. Not just those you personally don’t think ought to be crimes. Including attention seeking suspended members of Reform.
