Reeves' Budget thread

I wrote this on Thursday last week for another site ;

Wot ? No Income Tax hike ??

Why the ( latest ) u-turn by the hapless Reeves and Starmer ?

I’ll tell you what it’s not. It’s not because it isn’t the right thing to do towards solving the country’s fiscal problems. It’s not because the Treasury have belatedly concluded that it wasn’t the right thing to do towards solving the country’s fiscal problems. It IS to do with something else. If we are now naming Storms, how about we start naming Budgets. And let’s call this the ‘ Self Preservation ‘ Budget. Because that’s what it is.

Implementing the rumoured 2p rise in Income Tax would have sounded the political death knell for Starmer and Reeves. Despite Reeves stating that she would make “ tough decisions that may not be popular but are in the country’s interests “, it seems that ultimately her own future is more important.

I think most people can see that radical change is needed. And that Income Tax increase , although certainly not popular, could be ‘ sold on the doorstep ‘ IF it was part of a package of changes that turned the economy around.

What would they look like ? Well, as in any business, when income is proving difficult then you look at cutting your costs. And this is so far a major fail of this government. They are politically hamstrung by factions within their own Party and that’s an issue that is not going away anytime soon.

At present they are lurching from one crisis or drama to another. None of the Cabinet inspire confidence or competence. It’s not a good look when your default position is that it’s always someone else’s fault. After 17 months in power ( huh ! ) it’s time to start owning the issues not pointing fingers.

The Tories are certainly to blame for one thing though. That they were so bad that this lot got elected. I can forgive them some things but not that one.

Known knowns starting with our very high level of interest we pay on debt and slow growth, any Chancellor should have seen major problems a mile off and not doing so must be a failure.

Agree

I was wondering if there had been any resignations at the OBR after the early release of its budget assessment, it seems not.
It was released about 1 hour before her budget speech. My initial reaction so what, yet another government cock up but it's not like it was a week before the budget, no real harm done.

However that was before I realised that the OBR had told Reeves there was no black hole and they knew or guessed she would lie about their forecast. OBR forecasts are mostly wrong and that is down to them, so they must be sensitive about their public image.

Methinks this time someone at the OBR was getting the message out, don't blame us.

Agree with your second paragraph and still surprised no one has resigned, bit of integrity.

Just tagged on budget thread as even doctors are saying it’s a blag a lot of times. No wonder the welfare budget is so huge. Life ain’t meant to be easy.
SUCK IT UP and 2 TK had a chance to do something. Maybe he knew this was coming out and now has the evidence to do his cuts without his mealy mouthed back benchers crying about their votes. If ever there were local elections I would add. Albeit is that the reason he’s cancelling them all over the place!!!

The real effects of this budget are only just beginning. You think this year is bad. Wait until next year.
