Rayo Vallecano

Currently 1 up against 3rd place Villarreal and fairly dominant. It's going to be a very tough game.

2-0 now

The only positive I can think of for us from their impressive performance is that it means they may well need to take their last game (4 days before the final) of the season seriously. As they now have a decent chance of qualifying for Europe through the league.

Very tough final. They are like we were going into the FA Cup final, never won a trophy but go into it with lots of optimism. As previously mentioned on here, they are also in a lot better form than we are.

The key for me is Oli. He's been there, he's done it. He knows how to win in Europe. I'm trusting he will learn everything he can about them and will set us up to do the job.

Somethimg tells me he probably won't change the system.

Rayo Vallecano finished 8th in La Liga last season and are currently 8th in the table.
They are going to prove 'Tough nuts to crack' and our defence has been far from watertight in recent matches.
A victory for the Spanish team would not surprise me one jot.

The bookies have us as clear favourites. Not sure why. The only logic behind it as far as I tell is that we were made favourites to win the competition at the outset, but that was back when we were flying. We are more sort of shuffling along now.

The other factor might be relative squad cost, but that's a bit of a red herring as we have to pay premier league prices and they don't.

Still, you never see a poor bookie....

I recall a charming gentleman, now sadly deceased, who did not cast his money in the direction of bookmakers.
He once said to me, words to the effect, that the only time he would do so is when he saw a 'Bookie' riding a bicycle with holes in the back of his trousers.

Probably just reflecting the amount being bet on the result. Bookies in Spain might have a different view.

I agree Willo. I've watched highlights of some of their matches on YouTube and they look a very good side. Their 'keeper is impressive for sure.

Definitely not a push over for us.

at the risk of sounding like our resident Doom-monger, i will be putting twenty quid on Rayo V winning. Its something to do with UEFA referees. Them accidentally on purpose granting Rayo V a Penalty early in the game.

I had a snoop on one of their forums the other week and, with the page automatically translated one of the many posts read something like this:
"I admit I don't follow the premier league and only know their big clubs but come on... This Palacio Del Cristal team is in 15th! Surely they can't be good"

I hope their manager and coaches share the same optimism 😌
