Prof Jason Arday

My take was that he was a particular type of modern bully: the passive aggressive or victimhood bully. The usage of supposed extreme hardship and suffering to win favour and status.

Arday used every lever he could to engineer his meteoric rise. I have watched some of the videos of his web seminars. He has very evidently rehearsed some of his lies and tried many of them out on an individual interviewer as a dry-run before going more 'public' with a falsehood once it has gone unchallenged in a selective setting. This all shows malice aforethought, not the kind of on-the-hoof embellishment that some may make in conversation to win favour or rapport.

The very considerable leverage he had over the academic gatekeepers clearly emboldened him - he became a Pied Piper figure. Yet of course the paradox of continued prominence and adulation brought the gaze of scrutiny open him. This is where the real bully showed his spots, with very disturbing claims of violent racist threats and intimidation (pigs head; knifeman etc.) , before instructing pugnacious lawyers and setting the Police on his challengers.

His story is not new. There was a famous case of Kaspar Hauser, the mute and illiterate boy who wanted to be a cavalryman and became a cause celebre in Germany in 1800's. The Arday story to a tee, including the bizarre death.

So a bully then, worthy only of pity as he was clearly an unstable fellow but never a man of the fibre he professed.

Condolences to his family.

Yes, some of the worst people manipulate using sob stories and victimhood, particularly from their childhood.
I think it is a form of 'covert narcissism' that relies on do-gooder enablers who act as flying monkeys for the narcissist.

The Arday story has so many angles and involves so many other notable people and institutions, from Cambridge and several other Universities, to Andy Murray, 7up and the BBC, Sir Simon Baron-Cohen, even 'ol CPFC...etc etc that it was bound to be seen as the story that keeps on giving. That it could motor on through silly-season amassing clicks.

This was all in the week/month that Arday's blockbuster autobiography was released. This is very significant because he had clearly talked with Simon & Schuster and his book tour was pulled. He quit Cambridge too and they had no doubt, a great number of questions to ask him BUT Simon & Schuster are a whole different player from the wimpy, fawning world of academe that Arday had slyly wrapped around his finger.

As one of USA's major publishing houses, they have a formidable legal team to fend off any claims arising from any works that get published under their imprint. A couple of Zoom calls from some hardball NY lawyers, basically grilling Arday why S&S were being dragged into the bad publicity and then them no doubt delineating the major repercussions for Arday (breach of contract) and the possibility that they may have to pull the book....Those would doubtless be some very tough realities to face for a fragile Arday.

The Pied Piper bullsh*t would just not wash with such folk.

I will be very interested to see how the book performs and even to read extracts from it when it emerges at end of month.

Well IMHO the book is absolutely pointless now, to buy or to read…it’s just a work of fiction and would be irrelevant, not knowing which bits might be true and which bits are just purely made up.

A bit like The Salt Path, only far worse!

Causing train drivers untold anguish in the process.
It has to be said that some suicides are very selfish acts, leaving other people to deal with the pain.
Sadly my cousin did this at Clapham junction 25 or so years ago right near Xmas.
Planned it as he sent his suicide note in the post the day before.
That was over being knocked for money on a job he did and couldn’t pay his blokes. Ffs it was surreal and this bought it back.!

Truth hurts

WWII. Josef Stalin liquidated the Soviet bloke who (correctly) identified that all their military aviation manufacturing was not fit for purpose. 1942 Soviet bombers & fighters were shyte. Same as their cars, clothes & food.

The bloke told the truth and got it in the neck.

contractor?
Ive seen / been in these situations, awful.
one of the common events with the self employed thats of little interest to others.
often deliberate by the bigger fish but sometimes a case of the wrong job.

Suspended because he probably reported it officially to some one up high and got told to STFU he’s a black dude. Now the chickens were coming home and they are shitting a brick.
we are now looking at an academic Civil War. Professors all throwing sh1t at each other. Accusations amid counter-accusations.

Why does it remind me of Grenfell ?

Presumably there is a lot of CV checking going on all over the country but the question remains: how many others in similar situations are have been promoted into positions they're not properly qualified to fulfil? Medical specialists? Airline pilots? Senior policemen?

I suspect roles like airline pilots, especially commerical and so on, would be pretty immune from this kind of BS, primarily down to insurance requirements. A jet line goes down due to a DEI hire error and the compensation payouts would be astronomical.

In terms of the medicial stuff, then the bigger issue is more around foreign doctors blagging qualifications in their home nations then winging it over here. Plenty of stories of that all around.

But in spaces such as Academia, NGO's, local authorities and so on? Rammed full of people elevated to positions of power based on how good their photo looks on promotional literature rather than ability.
