Prison - Early releases

"A prison capacity crisis would be likely if fewer prisoners were allowed early release, Justice Secretary Alex Norris has warned, as the government announced revised plans to tackle overcrowding.

Prisoners who committed rape, grooming, and serious child sex offences will be excluded from an early release scheme for England and Wales.

But the mother of PC Andrew Harper told the BBC she was "devastated" to learn that two men who were jailed for manslaughter after her son was killed will still be eligible to have their sentences cut short.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham said he "wanted to go even further", but that would not be possible without the prison system collapsing and putting the public "at much greater risk". (BBC website)

I am angry that serious offenders being released early, is putting the (tax paying) public, at greater risk

12% are foreign nationals. Tell their country to take them. Refusal should be met with all immigration arrangements being cancelled.

I've always thought that but we don't do it. I would like good reasons why we do not. After all, if it were France or Spain I get the retaliation. However, is there really a strong flow of British migrants to Pakistan or Albania...

Perhaps there is? Actually, inevitably there is. Not only could Albania and Pakistan refuse to have their criminals back, but what if they refused to have any of their nationals or former nationals back? They would be stuck here, and there is nothing we could do about it.

well yes. Surely His Majesty needs to free up cells. Especially for all those feckers writing hurty words. Words about Rape Gangs on tik tock.

Why haven't we built more prisons? This crisis has been going on for years. The idea of releasing dangerous criminals early is nuts. So we release one lot of scumbags only to replace them with another. Absolutely barmy.

Why is no one asking why there are so many criminals? The Tories created a load more prison spaces, and they are already used up. I strongly suspect that immigration is a big factor in that.

So now we have illegal immigrants, more dangerous criminals and the ever troublesome travellers at large in our communities. Have the British people ever been more betrayed by their government?

Vote Reform.

It is beyond belief that scum are being released when there are people in jail for saying the wrong words.

What the hell is going on in Britain? We must reject this insanity at the next opportunity.

PC Harper's killers laughed on the way in and will laugh on the way out.

Burnham showing he is all talk on this matter and will hide behind a fake legal excuse. He tried to make a popular gesture without checking

Really sorry for the family

Governments are constantly hiding behind the law now. They make the law.

It's about time Parliament as a whole passed new laws to deal with some of the serious problems that we now face. All these fuckwits want to do is use existing laws as an excuse.

You always have reasons not to do things. Typically leftist.

If we can't deport, then we should permanently ban immigration from those countries. The third-country idea I proposed on here long before Rwanda isn't looking so bad now is it?

We have to plan for the future and invest in it. This is not going away.

It seems ludicrous that these two offenders could be considered for early release. I understand the new Sentencing Act 2026 and that they fall within the manslaughter umbrella but how on earth did this new legislation not contain a clause excluding those who kill a police officer or other emergency worker.

The government talk big on protecting our police officers, law enforcement and emergency workers and then do this. It seems utter madness and totally wrong not to have included this simple exclusion.

This is from the BBC.

Building a new standard prison in the UK typically costs between £250 million and £300 million though complex replacements for older facilities can reach up to £1 billion. Due to sharp construction inflation and supply shortages, the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) currently estimates the capital cost to build a prison at £600,000 per cell (or place).

For £600,000 we could build three houses to put each person in.

That is just crazy, the world has gone mad!

Totally unsustainable.

Poor from Labour "it's not our fault blame the previous government".

Various Labour politicians have made it quite clear that the party does not like jail and would prefer alternate solutions. Okay well then don't hide behind it's not our fault.....

Prison overcrowding is a real problem and successive governments have failed to address it. Labour's solution is to tag more people but that isn't working either.

I can't help but think that this is just an early symptom of the predicted collapse of society.

Increased criminality. An endless influx of illegal immigrants. Weak, corrupt, self-serving governments.
A financially bankrupt nation.

Who can turn it around?

I shall say again, Singapore uses corporal punishment and it works as a deterrent.

For convicted foreign offenders, cane and deport

100% this would have a quick impact on crime.

There is undoubtedly a contributing factor because of under investment from previous governments. There is also the review undertaken by the tories and in particular David Gauke who supported an extended early release scheme but ultimately the new Sentencing Act 2026 is very much a Labour piece of legislation and why it didn’t contain an exclusion for killers of emergency workers is beyond me.

I’m not saying their lives are worth more than those of our own or our loved ones but there has been a lot talk and posturing from recent governments and other political parties about extra protection for Law Enforcement and other emergency workers. An overarching piece of legislation to further protect and support these people would have been straightforward to include in the new Sentencing Act and an amendment should be proposed as a matter of urgency.

I'd settle for instant deportation of those convicted of crimes less than (TBC) years.

Is it really worth sending a person to prison for 1 year if you can deport him? Most criminals are a drain on the taxpayer so this is more of a punishment as they will lose their benefits.

Please stop posting this kind of nonsense! It helps no one.

People are jailed for incitement. Not just “saying the wrong thing”. You can say whatever you like, criticise policies and recommend others. What you cannot do is take any actions, or encourage others to, which break the law.
