Planned Early Summer Spending

Well, we got £15.5m for finishing 12th, £1.8m for winning the FA Cup, we had a declared squad of 25 & we don't get anything for the Community Shield.

I was looking into this and we get something like 135.5 million for finishing 12th. 15.5 million more than the last place finishing.

I’m a bit more relaxed about new players during the next week as long as they are there for the pre season training camp in Austria.

That’s when the serious work starts to be done , honing tactics and formations for the new season. It gives new players an ideal opportunity to acclimatise to the manager’s methods and their new teammates.
Ideally you don’t want to be doing that with the pressure of getting results in the Premier League games.

It’s noteworthy how long it took for Lacroix and Sarr to look settled, and Glasner has spoken openly about his frustrations with the lateness of last summer’s window, partly attributing the poor start to the season to the tardiness of our dealings.

In terms of outgoings what have Richards, Hughes, Lerma and Sarr done wrong?

These appear to be our only first team players not linked with speculation about moves away.
I’d be insulted if I were them!

I dont disagree, but assuming we keep what we already have. We know our starting team for the charity shield. We're got a well drilled tight knit group. They all know the system, and Glasner has them all for a solid couple of weeks to get them prepped.

So we have the luxury so to speak, of being able to sign players late into the window without the need for them to have to go straight in to the first team.

Worst case scenario and Guehi gets bought in the last week, Lerma is more than capable of stepping in whilst the new CB (hopefully Diomande) gets up to speed. Eze would be harder, but with Esse, JRS and Franca there is at least options.

For me the 23 highlighted are definitely in, probably Kporha as well if no other RB is purchased. so 1 or 2 back up players, Davide Calabria would seem a no brainer to me, so one more if nobody leaves, no point in having more than 25 players, until next window
We don’t need to include Riad as not Lily to be fit till January so frees up loan space

It's a little quiet, so let me be controversial and suggest that the club has already done its planned early summer business, namely:
  • a No 2 keeper = Benitez
  • a long-needed LWB to challenge or as back-up for Mitchell = Sosa
Glasner is on record as wanting to work with a small 1st team squad.

The current squad comprises:
  • 3 keepers = Henderson, Benitez and Matthews
  • 5 CBs = Guehi, Lacroix, Richards, Riad and Holding
  • 3 RB/RWB = Munoz, Clyne and Kporha
  • 2 LB/LWBs = Mitchell and Sosa
  • 8 midfielders = Wharton, Kamada, Hughes, Lerma, Doucoure, Devenny, Ahamada and Ozoh
  • 5 no 10s/wingers = Eze, Sarr, Esse, França and Rak-Sakyi
  • 3 strikers = Mateta, Nketiah and Edouard.
That's a total of 29 players.

We also have a couple of Academy players (Adamarola and Agbinone) who have had brief cameos for the 1st team.

Any other incomings during this window may be dependent on outgoings.

We might say, "well we've got some dead wood to shift - Edouard, Ahamada and Holding" but until we shift them they're part of the available squad.

Yes, I know we will be playing in Europe, but a club of our size and with our limited resources can't afford to have a bloated squad just in case.
Just note Holding will never play a first team game for Palace ever again, whilst Glasner is there. His attitude stinks and Glasner pushed him out.

Only if we offload/loan out the likes of Ahamada, Holding, Ebiowei, Rak-Sakyi and Edouard as we still have 25 players over the age threshhold on our books.
Clickbait are reporting that Wrexham, Coventry & Sheff Utd are interested in Holding. He was on loan at Sheff Utd end of last season. Do you know when his contract runs out DB? Guess it'll be a loan if he does go.

His contract is until September next year. A rare case of the last year coming up and no one noticing.

It wouldn't surprise me if Lerma plays more at the back than midfield next season.

Esse and JRS are predominantly right-sided players where Sarr is a fixture. We could do with Franca stepping up. He was a bit of a wild punt and, for one reason or another, we have had little from him in two years

If we could sell Ahamada, Rak-Sakyi and edouard that would give us a decent pot to sign someone of quality. Probably won’t happen
I don't think we have a problem re a transfer pot. We're nowhere near PSR trouble. HOWEVER, I'm not at all sure how we stand re UEFA's FFP rules on wages. Both Chelsea and Villa got heavy fines recently (and I mean heavy - Chelsea over 30m euros and Villa over 10m) for breaking those.

I also note that a couple of PL clubs have been warned by FIFA for swapping Academy players at inflated prices. What FIFA plan to do about it, I don't know.

Not sure that we'd get anymore than 10 mil or so with add on perhaps making more. And that would only be for Rak-Sakyi. I'd be ecstatic if we got more than "an undisclosed fee" for the others. Edouard has ruined his value with lack of effort. Ahamada just doesn't seem to be at the required standard.

These were all surplus last season, all out on loan. Edouard, is reportedly on the transfer list now, might get a buyer. Rak Sakai wouldn’t be hard to sell if not over priced. None seem to have a future with the club, but unless they are moved on preferably permanently it is difficult to bring people in. It’s not our squad size so much as the quality in it . The fact that nothing has happened on this yet is not grounds for a doom and gloom outlook. Glasner, unlike last year has his full squad in and probably looking to maintain the levels reached at the end of last season. Anyone coming in a little late wont disrupt things.

Exactly this. There's no reason for Glasner to be upset at this juncture.
  • We brought in the two essential players early
  • We still have the squad that won the FA Cup and which had a strong second half to last season
  • That squad know how to play Glasner's system and tactics and what's more they are increasingly growing to trust him.
Yes. there's still a long way to the end of the transfer window and we could yet lose one or more key players but we have to trust that Parish & Co have appropriate plans in place.

We have no fewer than five England internationals in our squad (and I'm not counting Clyne because he's past it but can do a job if needed), two Colombian internationals (let's not forget they reached the final of the Copa America last season, so they're no mugs) plus a Japanese international and ones from Senegal and the US. A number of those are inevitably going to be in demand from the big fish of the PL and Europe. We just have to get used to it and hope that most of the vast majority of the rumours are simply silly click bait.

Come 2nd September, let's hope we can all breathe a big sigh of relief and enjoy the rest of the new season.
