Places....formerly important and now sadly a backwater

Location
south pole
Country
Netherlands
And far less visitors now than previously. And off the radar for many people today. Joe Public would often struggle to find these places, on a World-map. Therefore, the thread excludes places like Pompeii & Stonehenge. Cos they are now mobbed by millions of tourists every year.

1. Chester......A Roman port city, for a while maybe even the most important port in the British isles.

2. Hattusa...........capital of the Hittite empire

3. Avignon............Papal headquarters in the 14th Century.

4. Ravenna............the Imperial Capital of Western Rome.......the city of Rome itself fell long before Rome fell.

5. Detroit......the Motor City. Formerly a boom-town. Now it makes Thornton Heath look posh.

6. Croydon Airport

what others ?

The Whitgift Centre and high street, Croydon.

Once a big pull attracting people to shop and spend lots of money. Now it attracts people to smoke weed, stand around in masks and wait for someone to mug if they look naive and weak enough. Sh1thole.

A lot of coastal towns, particularly along the SE, had significance for maritime history, especially during war time, sadly all far down the steep slopes of decline. Dover, Ramsgate, Margate, Gravesend.
Bexhill-on-sea was the first venue for the start of British Motor sport. Next door is Hastings (where the Normans landed) and further on is Rye (home of Captain Pugwash). All getting run down, as banks leave and shops close. If you're lucky there might be a little Tesco Express, or Morrisons. No top-end supermarkets.

Add Canterbury to that list. Apart from the Cathedral, you've got another Chav-town.

Crystal Palace Park
I find it very sad that such a great venue as Crystal Palace park should have fallen into such a nonentity. OK, I know the locals like it for dog walks etc, but it is one ugly decaying old relic.
There are investors ready to fund a multi million revamp including a return of the now Premier team CPFC, but it seems the leftie council is still resisting the temptation.
A new build Crystal Palace on its original site, which would house a state of the art hospital, including a professional sports clinic, and a shopping centre with all the usual bolt ons.
Hotel, housing and a new build mega sports centre to replace the existing crumbling relic, extensive underground parking and of course a 42000 seater new stadium on the existing location.
The tired old green areas would be refreshed and fully cared for moving forwards. But the NIMBY brigade will continue to block such a plan for reasons known best to themselves.

Until they realise property prices plummeting because of the derelict surrounding areas. It will then be concreted over for a sprawling housing estate

Tombstone Arizona, once a booming silver mining town with a thriving community, now little more than a wild west tourist attraction, where you can watch staged productions of the gunfight at OK Corral.

At least you can still mosey on through the swing doors at the fabulous Crystal Palace Saloon for a bourbon and see the bullet holes still in the ceiling. It's also the home of the Golden Eagle brewery which was destroyed by fire in 1882.

'the Docks'....... East London, Liverpool, wherever. Now all silent. Replaced by Shipping Containers and Felixstowe.
Ten thousand men in flat caps. Now replaced by one giant crane & a computer. Isnt it curious how the dockers of West Ham and Millwall are all gone, but the animosity continues.

Caterham
Once a sleepy village with a few pubs . Being turned into a Croydon annex . High street full of uber eat mopeds at night and they are even widening the pavements so the locals don't fall into the road when it kicks off . Give it another 5 years and you wont be able to tell the difference between Caterham and Croydon

Unfortunately true.

Thankfully still quite nice "on the hill" but the "valley" is definately going downhill, (pun intended)

Not relevant. Now, Getting the thread back on track..........

Englands former Coal,Steel, Industrial & Textile towns. Isnt it curious how they all start with the letter B. With the exception of Leicester.

Bradford, Bolton, Blackpool, Burnley, Birmingham. Towns sucking in workers and spewing out economic produce. Formerly important for generating wealth, taxes, & jobs.....now the opposite. Those towns formerly pushed money out into the UK exchequer....now the opposite. Now sadly all a backwater.
