Paqueta and Trossard

Because in 2-3 years Trossard will be worth nothing. Its taken us a long time as a team to move away from signing end of career players, with no sell on value.

Franca still has time
Agree. If Trossard was a free transfer worth considering but otherwise doesn’t fit the model we have been moving towards since Hodgson first stint

I don’t understand why they wouldn’t. Think he’s mustard, changes the game every time I see him come on. Still got a few decent years in him.
we paid more than that for an unknown Franca from Brazil, I get that we bought potential,
but Trossard would be ready to go straight away.
I agree.

If Eze departs I can't think of a player who's more tailor made to replace him in that left sided attacking role than Trossard.

It's not a gamble as he's done it consistently at Premier League level and is capable of making an instant impact.

Eze's goals and assists would need replacing if he goes and Trossard has a very good record in providing these.

Franca (if he ever stays fit) or Esse may provide the answer in time, but they sure are not ready this season - and that's what would be necessary.

Having said all of the above, I don't think there's a cat in hell's chance of Trossard joining and am only commenting from a footballing as opposed to a financial perspective.

Trossard is a decent player and would be a great addition at most clubs in the league, how can people turn their nose up at him when the alternative is an unproven Brazilian kid who's barely played senior football and has been injured for 2 years.
Not at the price Arsenal will demand for him. Isn't it strange. When they are selling their unwanted crap they want unrealistic money for them yet in their pursuit of Eze they claim to want him badly yet have put every rumour out there possible that they wont pay more than £50m!
Its actually pretty naive. We all know selling high and buying cheap is good business but not when your valuations are childish.

Is it that much money in today's game tho ? He's a proven player, you know what you're getting, not every signing is gonna be in their prime, not at the expense of eze but I'd be more than happy if we signed Trossard.

Conventional wisdom around the age of players has changed.
These days you can have an 'old' 28 year old and a 'young' 30 year old, depending upon injury history, fitness levels and attitude.
It's evident that some players who were playing Premier League football as teenage prodigies such as Sterling and Rooney really dropped off in their late 20s as if 10 years of top level football had taken it's toll.
Then you have a player such as Salah in his early thirties who has not dropped off at all and probably had the best season of his career last season.

With regard to Palace it's clear that the general policy is to buy young, buy potential and act as a possible stepping stone to e.g a Champions League Club.

However, if there's a need to replace a key component of your team (as Eze is), it could be something of a gamble to go for young potential inexperienced at Premier League level.
In such a case I can see an argument for bringing in an experienced 30 year old of proven quality and excellent fitness levels, even if there's no great resale value.

Trossard is a decent player. However, I have a couple of concerns apart from the financial implications.
  1. He's primarily a winger having played most of his games out wide. If Eze goes we do need someone with a proven no 10 record.
  2. Players often look good as part of a strong team that is consistently near the top of a league. Put them in a smaller midtable team and they can struggle to show that same form. IN other words, how much of a player's form is down to the collective strength around them?
That's why I tend to be reluctant to go for players from big clubs unless it's clear that they are good players in their own right but such players are rarely sold by the big clubs for the simple reason they are good players.

Trossard excelled for non big club Brighton , which is what tempted Arsenal in the first place having spent 4 seasons at Brighton.

He also managed to regularly feature in the Belgium national team in an era when Belgium have been crammed been excellent attacking players.

He’s not an out and out winger , tending to play further infield and Arsenal have used him up front on a number of occasions.
He takes up similar positions to Eze and is mobile with a fine first touch, good burst of pace and a very good shot in both feet.
He has a very good record in both goals and assists.

I don’t think we’ll go for him by the way - but I think he’d be a better choice for this season as a replacement for Eze than an untried gamble.
