Palace vs KuPS.....Finland

Today I read in a Finnish tabloid that KuPS star player Jaakko Oksanen will move to FC Kairat Almaty, Kazakhstan after this Palace game. How it will affect his last performance in KuPS is hard to say. Also 5 other players will be leaving for next season. KuPS team has rested for the weekend, Monday was a training day and the team will arrive in London on Tuesday. The Finnish press also thought that since Palace has lost at home twice in a row, maybe this streak will continue and KuPS will win...Let's hope not!

Will KuPS players be unnerved by the Selhurst atmosphere ? It'll certainly impact the way they play.
I'm hoping it will also lift the Palace players as they put in a stoic and forthright performance.
Find those shooting boots and Go for goal.

Kamada is out fir 8-10 weeks.
Devenny will be seeing more game time.
Glasner confirmed that there will be two different starting line ups for Thursday and Saturday.

If Glasner keep to this fully I’d think he’ll give some spread of senior players playing the skulls game e.g one of the regular centre backs starting the Kups game and Canvot starting with the other two at the weekend. Nketiah may play against Kups meaning Devenny has to play as a ten against Leeds?

We may think of the Arsenal game too, those who start on Thursday will be more fresh for that.

Although Glasner had recently said that he wasn't worried about having 2 extra games in February in the ECL, he was quite firm today that the intention tomorrow is to win the game and qualify directly for the last 16. This might suggest he intends playing more than two or three first teamers tomorrow.

Whilst a win for KuPS would see them qualify for the elimination round, a draw could be enough for them given their superior GD over 4 of the teams 1 point above them. They may well try first and foremost not to lose the game and hope to do a Lanarca on us. As was said above, those playing tomorrow will be more ready for Tuesday's trip to the Emirates. I wouldn't be surprised to see a stronger Palace team tomorrow than many expect with Glasner opting to risk dropping the points at Elland Road.

I would rather expect him to field the strongest 11 players available, because I don't think we will regularly have the chance to achieve something in European competitions every season in the future.

I expect Hughes to start and captain the team and Jemide to play left centre back and Canvot right centre back, with possibly one of the senior centre backs taking the central and organising role.
Potentially a front 3 of Esse, Nketiah and Uche.
This would leave Devenny either partnering Hughes in midfield or at RWB.
Perhaps at RWB if Lerma also starts.
But if Glasner is true to his word he is going to start with 2 different teams in the next 2 games.
I don't see how that is feasible, but we shall see.
Does anybody know if the youngsters set up the some way under Darren Powell?
At least they would be familiar with the system and positioning.

I'd expect it'll be full strength or very close to it against Leeds, meaning it's basically a 1st XI and 2nd XI.

First XI likely to be Henderson, Richards, Lacroix, Guehi, Clyne, Wharton, Lerma, Mitchell, Pino, Nketiah, Mateta.

Second XI something like:

Benitez

Canvot King? Jemide?

Drakes-Thomas? Hughes Devenny Sosa

Esse Uche

Casey/Marsh?
There's a few talented players in that team who want to be playing regular Premier League minutes who need to put their big boy pants on and deliver a performance. With how many games there are in the next couple of weeks I think it's a real make or break night for Esse, Uche and Devenny in particular.

I can’t see us naming 4 young players (if you count Canvot) across the back five for Kups. I think having one of our regular centre backs strengthens us considerably and losing one for Canvot against Leeds isn’t the end of the world.

An inexperienced CM can work alongside a senior pro.

I also think we need a strongish front 3 to help win the game. Glasner has been happy to go with an AM as a ten so Devenny could start against Leeds with a view to bringing on Nketiah and Uche if needed.

Admittedly I don’t know the young players well but I’d suggest…

Kups -
Benitez

King? LeCroix Jemide?

Drakes-Thomas? Hughes Rodney Sosa

Esse Nketiah

Uche

Casey/Marsh to come on if we get safe

Leeds- Henderson, Richards,Canvot, Guehi, Clyne, Wharton, Lerma, Mitchell, Pino, Devenny, Mateta

Honestly, I kinda wish Joel Ward was still an option!

These are the players that, you would imagine, almost certainly start on Thursday if OG is going to go with two different XIs for the KuUps and Leeds games. The question is, who would fill in at centre-back? Who accompanies Lerma in midfield, and who would our other wide player be? My gut feeling is he'll end up playing all of our usual three centre-backs but he'll rotate them across the two games so none of them plays 180 minutes. Similarly, I think Lerma, Wharton and Hughes will rotate rather than a youth player fill in. With Sarr gone, Kamada now injured and Devenny possibly having to fill in at right back we are looking very short up top. I wonder if Nketiah and Pino might play one half each on Thursday and something similar on Saturday. I just can't see OG suddenly throwing even two or three U21/U18 players in from the start, but you never know. More likely we might see a couple get a run out in the last 15/20 minutes on Thursday if we have the game in the bag. Whatever Glasner says about being fine with a play-off, he's a born winner so there's no way he means it!

Benitez

Devenny Canvot ? ? Sosa

Lerma ?

Esse Uche ?
Ahamada in midfield? Casey up front maybe and probably couple of u21s in defence

Watching Newcastle this evening they have substituted Wissa, Barnes and Murphy with Woltenmade, Gordan and Elanga.
Hundreds of millions of value.
Arsenal, Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool etc have similar luxuries in terms of choices for front 3 positions.
We are really punching above our weight in keeping their company.

Wissa, Barnes and Murphy purchased for a total which could reach nearly £105 Mill.
Woltemade, Gordon and Elanga purchased for fees which could reach nearly £170 Mill.

And makes the impending Carabao Cup draw pointless for us. To get through Arsenal and then two of Newcastle, Chelsea or City to win it from here is farcical with the current squad.

Just consider the disparity in Revenues (2023-24 latest statistics) :

its all about Glasner. A magic chef can work miracles.

I think everyone is well aware that City, Arsenal and Chelsea make more money that Palace, and that Newcastle's owners have a few quid too.

A route of Liverpool away, Arsenal away, Chelsea 2 legs and then likely City is probably the hardest possible route. Could only be worse if we had drawn Everton away! That plus an FA Cup defence, a league campaign and a European effort means 16 outfield players and 10 games in the next 30 days if we beat Arsenal.

We knew there would be a crunch. Here it is. Something's going to give.
