Palace Summer 2026 transfers?

I'd say JSL did lose his place to Mateta. He had a run at the position without competition and apart from JSL's first game he didn't look that effective and the difference that Mateta made when he returned was clear despite him not being amazing or fully fit. Therefore JSL lost his place to him.

I don't think anyone was expecting JSL or Johnson to set the world alight but in 6 months they've shown very little and when they've played the team look noticeably weaker. That's not exactly what you fork 90m out for.

Do I want them to do well and justify their price tags? Absolutely.

Do I feel confident of this after witnessing their performances so far? Absolutely not.
I would say that Mateta won his place back, especially with a manager who already likes him and in a team that know his movement and know how he plays football.

When you join a new team, you have to learn every individuals movement on the football pitch. For example, Ismaila Sarr made very specific runs at very specific times under Glasner. Mateta, Munoz and Wharton knew exactly where he would be when he made those runs. Johnson however doesn't make those runs and therefore you see where possession gets slowed down more when he plays in comparison to Sarr, because we're not able to progress the ball as quickly yet. That comes with time when the players learn each other better. They can't do that over the course of 6 months and handful of appearances.

I would argue that JSL put himself about a lot, tired out defenders and showed promising signs with the chances he was given. When he is the main man is when we can truly judge him, same for Johnson.

Patience tested not at team but at individual level.
Supporters witness significant amounts on certain players and see precious little to justify the outlay.
As for 'Yours Truly' I reiterate my use of 'Thus far' and have not discounted the fact that some players might improve their performances under Monsieur Sage.
Mateta started here in 2021 and was crap for the first 2 years, until Glasner came along. The coming of Sage may change the fortunes of the so called under peformers.

Two other attackers purchased in January did make instant impacts though. Semenyo and Rayan. One who cost more than ours and one that cost less. Obviously different situations but it shows new players can make an impact and it shouldn't have to take 6 months.

Fair enough. Are you confident that they have what it takes to overtake those currently in front of them and earn the right to become our main men?

I'm convinced Mateta would not have been one of the top goalscorers in recent seasons had Roy stayed as manager.

Glasner saw what Mateta's strengths were and played to them leading to Glasner commenting that Mateta was the best finisher that he had worked with in football.

Roy has commented that Mateta was always a positive presence around the place and was always asking for first team opportunities, but Roy said others were ahead of him (e.g Ayew).

As fans we have to hope that Sage can unlock and unleash Larsen and Johnson as Glasner did with Mateta.
It may seem unlikely at present, but football does turn up surprises.

He did it with Edouard!

£10m or not at all.
He's a 1st team squad player with dozens of games under his belt, albeit most of them off the bench. He's a useful utility player. How much did they want for Hackney - unproven at PL level? They're having a laugh at £7m.

Even Transfermarkt value him as 12m euros and we know how conservative their valuations are. Furthermore he is 22 so lots of time ahead.

I'd want at least £15m for a player who can play at PL level even if he hasn't been pulling up trees.

Not content with Eze, they are now stealing our 16 year olds.
And they sold us David Price and took Kenny Sansom.
Not that I bear a grudge...

These ones hurt, adding Watson and Derry at Chelsea and the lad that went to Man Utd. Even with our superb facilities we are still getting picked off at youth level. I know it’s Arsenal, perhaps the lad is a fan but still there is a pathway here. Real shame

Hacknye has a solid rep over several years and was Champioship player of the season last year. Everton paid 16.5 m apparently, with significant add-ons, which seems a good deal. We will likely get a good look at him in the opening game
Championship teams, particularly those not receiving parachute payments, are unlikely to pay much for players. Devenney did not kick on as much as I would have hoped last year and limitations in strength and speed can be exposed. However he is a decent passer and likelier to score than most of our midfielders given a chance. I'd be very surprised if we got 10 million for him

They just need to tell him the name John Bostock.

John Bostock, who turned out not to be good enough. But earned a fortune from his move to spurs?
If he’d not taken the move , stayed at Palace and sank without trace on a youth contract, would probably be a scaffolder now.
Different ways of looking at things?

John Bostock was good enough at 15 though & I very much doubt reached his peak! Spurs ruined him ,otherwise he potentially has a career that outshined Clyne & Moses! As it was he achieved nothing in the game.

Similar could be said for how Spurs ruined Wayne.R, he bounced back afterwards, but he could have been alot better!

A lot of people (including me) wanting to see Drakes-Thomas playing a decent amount this season.
At 28 he could just as easy be playing for Cray Wanderers as Bayern Munich.
Loads of players drop off.
If Bostock had stayed, he could easily have flopped and been released without earning any money. Just saying, the Spurs move (although it never helped with his career), must have set him up financially.

Parish needs to recoup the money spent on the likes of Franca, Nketiah, Johnson, and Larsen to be able to step back int the market.

The conundrum is if we let him go how do we replace him? Even an average squad player is likely to cost c.£20m.

Squad depth required this season means we must keep players like Devenney and hope Sage is more inclined to trust squad players than Glasner.

If he is not considered part of the squad then a season long loan would be preferable.

Exactly! The football finance pyramid is such that when PL clubs are looking to buy from the Championship the starting price is around £15m but when a Championship club are wanting a PL squad player they think it's fine to offer between £5m and £7m. Devenny isn't going to start many games for us but he can do a decent job when one of the starting XI is tiring and needs to come off. He's versatile and can play in several positions. Glasner liked him because he followed orders and knew what his role was whichever position he was asked to play.

I see Ozoh in a similar vein. He had 10 games under Hodgson as an 18 yo. and has shown in his two loans at Derby since that he's more than comfortable in the Championship. I saw one rumour suggesting Derby were thinking of bidding £5m for him. I hope Sage has seen enough to want to keep him in the squad.
