Palace Summer 2026 transfers?

Out:
Olise
Eze
Guehi
Lacroix
Mateta?

In:
Sarr
Pino
Canvot
Johnson
Larsen

The above is crude, not comprehensive and simplistic, but I’m a simplistic chap.
Nobody will be able to convince me are better off - or can they?

The only thing I would say is that I often get things wrong , and at the beginning of last season I thought both Brentford and Bournemouth would struggle as they sold many of their better players and in the case of Brentford also lost their manager.
Contrary to expectations both clubs had their best ever seasons.

I suppose if we do very well, this time next season perhaps we’ll have to worry about Real Madrid taking Sage, PSG taking Johnson and Bayern Munich taking Larsen.

What were the 'out' players like when they first arrived? I seem to recall:
  • Olise being injured and somewhat lost to begin with albeit it with flashes of promise.
  • Eze was more miss than hit for the first year
  • Guehi started well
  • Lacroix took several months to settle and show his qualities
  • Mateta was basically AWOL for the first 3 years - not all down to him but he didn't impress either Hodgson or Vieira.
As for the 'ins', you've been somewhat selective as they're clearly not all replacements for the 'outs' as you've selected 2 CBs for 'outs' but only 1 on the 'ins' etc.
  • Sarr has contributed at least as much in the last two seasons as Olise did during the whole of his time with us (Sarr 33 goals of which 17 in PL; Olise 16 goals of which 14 in PL)
  • Pino has taken no longer to settle in the PL than Eze did
  • Canvot was 19 when he joined us, Guehi was 21. Let's see how good Canvot is in a couple of years before comparing
  • Johnson, quite frankly is a... I'm not one for swearing so insert your own word
  • Larsen has at least contributed which is more than Mateta did for quite some time.
with Wharton, Kamada, Munoz, Richards, Riad, Mitchell, Doucoure, Lerma, Hughes and even Nketiah (when fit), we still have a decent squad and I expect Mingueza will prove to be a solid option as will the new CB from Augsburg, if he comes.

The original lot were top top signings with Olise now being world class. Difficult to keep finding those gems. Sarr has been excellent and Canvot has a high ceiling so could be outstanding. I like Pino and think he will come good. Johnson looks lost and Larsen is ok just hampered by a ridiculous transfer fee

This is news to me.
Any truth in this report??

Apparently, we have been talking to Chelsea about Disasi but not yet clear what will happen. Various rumours including Disasi wants a bigger club than Palace - good luck to him; I hope he finds one as I'm not overjoyed at thought of him coming here.

This is the way to look at it.

Comparing outgoings to ingoing is completely pointless. One is leaving because they have hugely risen in value and statue during their time with us to the point that bigger clubs want them. The Arsenals, Chelseas, Bayern's didn't want them.

Progress isn't directly linear, we cannot for example sell Lacroix, and immediately buy a better replacement. But what we can and are trying to do is buy replacements with potentially higher ceilings (e.g. Canvot and Riad) some sensible free transfers, and some more established planers (Pino, JSL etc).

We are not going to get it right all of the time, but the net result is that the squad is slowly getting better and better.

Thought he was really good against us last season. But his age is a bit of an issue, ceiling reached, no sell on value.

If he was on a free, 100%, but not at the money being quoted.

The squad is getting better without Olise, Eze, Guehi and Lacroix??

I’ll have some of what you’re having.

With those players we would be (and were) aiming for top 6.
Without them most would be happy to finish mid table.
I’m all for a bit of positivity if it’s based on sound reasoning, but you can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.

Its not about comparing exact players. Or looking to granularly at every scenario. Its about looking at a positive direction of travel. Its also about being positive.

We had what 12 players at the WC. Our squad is stronger than its ever been. A team full of internationals. We've got a bleeding World Cup winner! That is despite Olise, Eze, Guehi having been sold.

This time 5/10 years ago we had an ageing squad, no sell on value, full of guys edging closer to retirement. Picking up players all on the way down. We now have a deeper much more balanced squad, have won 3 trophies and had the pleasure to watch some of the worlds best in our team. Most of our squad are improving.

As i said we cant look at progress as completely linear. We'll be taking little sideways or backwards steps to move forward.

I just dont know what the alternate reality you want/expect...The Zaha model? (and that only worked because he greedily signed contract after contract)

Were you against getting a fee for Guehi? Would you have not signed Olise because you wouldn't have agreed to a release clause? Would you have not let Anderson go, even if the money was great? We got 70m for a 27yo Eze, are you denying moving to his boyhood club?

I agree with many of your observations, don't pretend to be qualified to come up with better solutions and recognise the difficulties a club like Palace face when big clubs pursue their players.

What I'm disagreeing with is that we have a better squad now than the one containing Olise, Eze, Guehi and Lacroix.

I've been supporting Palace for nigh on 60 years and these players are amongst the best I've seen in that time wearing a Palace shirt.
Perhaps one or two of the players we are bringing in will achieve similar heights.
If they do, the new reality is they won't be at the club very long.

The biggest concern fot me, is we seem to have no idea who to bring in, where's the planning or contingency? Brighton (sorry for swearing), or Bournemouth (much better example) already have a plan in place regarding who to bring in, for each position. Guehi went and we panicked, Max is off and we are linked with every CB out there (not sure what happened to Creswell), but none of them fill me with much reassurance.

We need someone assertive to make our transfer decisions and the best ones for us, its frustrating & it doesnt feel like thats the case at all. Disai isnt the answer imo (think Sakho when he joined us on loan) and replacing experienced players with inexperienced doesnt work & we will get exposed at some point. Time to bring back the Dougggge?

I get your macro point, but I dont know, everything is always much more nuanced. its also worth noting that Olise and Lacroix never played in the same team.

Olise only put up great numbers in his last season (of which he still hardly played) and Eze took 2 seasons to get up and running properly. Lacroix was vilified at the start. Guehi was probably the only one who was consistently good from the off (but there was still lots of criticism of his heading). JP took years to start firing.

I guess the hope here is that in buying more established players, that have either played in the prem or other top leagues, they will get up to speed quicker and hopefully go on to be better.

Since a year ago Chadi and Jaydee have stepped up . Lost Mark and max about to leave . Chadi looked good at WC .

Talk seems to be linking us to a several ( 4 that are regularly mentioned ) incoming centre backs .

If we pick up 2 , to my thinking that gives us better depth moving into the new season .

Would be nice to get two new so while we are two very competent CB’s down , I think we are well placed moving forwards .

Would be nice if Borna stepped up to the levels we all saw in the “ highlights “ clips prior to his arrival .

We have left backs and right back options in the wings in Danny and Tayo . Will be interesting to see if they’ve impressed Sage enough to keep them around .

Cheers

Reality is that under Dougie , we bought in younger players , sold them for a profit and brought in new ones .

Occasional more experienced players .

Don’t see a change

Unfortunately Chadi also looked injured in World Cup and missed their knockout games!!

When we needed to step up in the market we did, under SA we got PVA, Jeff, Luca and it worked, we also went a long time without really selling anyone (& we had our golden card, Wilf),

This feels like we need to get this window right, we dont have that player who consistently can change a game, loosing one of the best leaders we've got doesnt help! And the scattergun approach doesnt appear to be great either.

wheres the plan, whats the strategy? Its crazy.

If Dougie was given 100 mil would we have ended up with Strand Larson & Johnson?

And this is a key point.
Riad is yet to prove he can put together an extended run in a Palace shirt.
He's clearly been unlucky with injuries, but it would be a gamble to assume he can become a Lacroix and play every game.
He's a good distributor of the ball and having a left footed player on the left of a back 3 provides a nice balance so fingers crossed he can contribute more.
