Our present squad

We have cover in every position and should no longer have to field 2 keepers and 3 untried youngsters on the bench as was the case on occasions last season.

Questionmarks remain in the make up and the resilence of the central defence and who will take the left sided number 10 role.
It's fine to rotate on occasions, but you still need to know your best team.
Part of the success under Glasner was due him knowing his best team and drilling them so each player knew his precise role.

I suppose the other question relates to what sort of contribution Sarr and Mateta make this season.
In theory they should both want to impress, Mateta to keep his French place and Sarr to eventually get his move.
Sadly, it's rarely that straightforward.

Maybe they will take a bit of time away to get over their 'injuries', and/or just get their head back in the right place.

To be fair JP seams to be ok last season, but we didn't know whilst he was wining the Conference he was also taking the club to a tribunal.

Lets hope the new guys can hit the ground running, and then all we'll need Sarr and JP for is fresh legs at the end of games. Both can go in Jan and good riddance.

Dangerclose listed the updated list of players, there are 29 of them. Riad is out for the season as such, that's 28, you listed the 3 lads who are not counted because of the age, that leaves 25, which is great for the EPL.

However, we will not be able to name as many for our Europa League squad, because of age restrictions & 'homegrown' player restrictions(doombear was looking at this not so long ago).
I got my list from Transfermarkt’s squad, which also includes Rak-Sakyi, otherwise it’s the same as Dangerclose.

If you were to include Rak-Sakyi, he is probably the player most likely not to make the final squad apart from Riad, although Sarr, Mateta, and Franca might also not make it.

Clearly one of these 4 will need to go, but to figure out who it will be will depend on what is exactly going on behind the scenes.

I read that the Portuguese and Turkish transfer windows are still open and Franca (loan) and JRS are linked with moves there.

Perhaps Doucoure will recover enough for Liverpool to make their usual attempt to put in their traditional low ball offer for a Palace player in the next window a la Guehi and Sarr.
They had a previous interest in him when he was one of our best players.

I think I'd rather to sell (if at all) to the loathed Forest than Liverpool who waste millions on all and sundry except when it comes to Palace players.

If our multiple wide players that we have signed come good, Liverpool can have Sarr in January for £65m. By then we will know whether we need another striker or whether JSL has upped his game and that money may be needed if he hasn’t.

My only real worry aside from an injury to Wharton is Disasi. He seemed a bit lumbering and got turned so easily a couple of times. Richards seemed a bit off too. We certainly don't have a rock-solid defence like we've been used in recent years. Hopefully, that gets sorted in time.

But otherwise, we have so many potential stars coming into the team like Osorio, Khalaili and Gozo to add to seriously talented freebies like Tomiyasu and Mingueza and loanees we should be able to rely upon like Ahanor, Guessand and hopefully Disasi. With Doucoure aiming to play a part and Timber adding depth, we could and probably should be really strong once we integrate players.

Aside from the situation with Sarr, the biggest question is can this system get the best out of Nketiah and JSL? If so, we'll have a squad with almost embarrassing depth and no excuses not to have a fantastic season.

Managers often make up their mind about players reasonably quickly, in probably the way that many of us look for things we like and dislike in a player.
Glasner wasn't having Holding, Esse, JRS, Ozoh or to an extent Franca.
But he did like e.g Devenny.

It was noteworthy that Sage yesterday threw new players straight into the team and onto the bench , in preference to players who have been with the club for weeks.
Perhaps I'm oversimpifying, but one would assume that if e.g Guessand and McNeil had impressed him in the matches and training so far they would have been involved yesterday.

Guessand is currently having a flounce. So is Lerma.

The loan of Guessand was lazy recruitment - not particularly impressive in his first spell, not wanted by Villa, but still available to pad out the squad? Yeah, get him in. Should have kept Franca...
I have to say, I think there's a decent player in there. He reminds me very much of Wilf. I'd suggest he's not that workmanlike in the press - hence unsuited to us.

Guessand was a sensible loan at the time before we signed the last 5 players. He adds an option and hopefully the competition will make the players work harder rather than sulk. Journalists assume players sulk if they are not in the team but mostly its just clickbait reporting. In the 80s and 90s there were only 2 subs so half the squad was left out on matchdays.

Guessand, was part of our euro squad, got experience, he was also part of Villa's euro squad, more experience, but, as you say, get a young inexperienced Brazilian lad in instead 😏 😳

Well in Franca's defence he has been here since the days of Roy, but then again I would have kept Devenny and not brought in Guessand, we have enough right sided players as it is, and Devenny offered experience and the ability and willingness to cover various positions. Oh well.
