Osorio

Country
USA
Hi everyone. Snuck by on that one for sure. I’ll take the point, but I wanna address something.

Now keep in mind I’m the ignorant American and pretty new to football so maybe it’s just a me thing.

I really think Osorio needs some more minutes. He comes on consistently with a burst, clearly knows how to get the ball into dangerous areas and isn’t afraid to let fly. Advised or not sometimes in football you take a shot on goal & weird things happen (citing: Rob Greene on Dempsey circa 2010 World Cup - sorry England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 supporters not trying to reopen a bad wound).

I like his pace and I’d like to see him featured more in the starting XI.

Thoughts?

I’d be ok dropping Wharton and moving Kamada into a more defensive mid role…

But then we’re losing our top scorer 🤔 could also move Osorio up from to the wing/striker
Well Wharton is going to be serving a one match suspension in Europe now so you may get your wish, assuming Sarr still can’t be arsed to play for us.

Agree he needs minutes.

Agreed but you don't drop Pino or Kamada.
You do if you're brave.

Osario has a much higher ceiling than Kamada. Sage is squeezing every inch out of Daichi right now and we're seeing the best of him. He's playing well. But Osario is a far superior footballer and won't progress if he never plays. It's horses for courses, but at least in some of the European games, I'd play Pino and Osario. They'll go on to be big players for us.

Another guy I’d like to see a LOT more of is Gozo. But that’s probably not happening anytime soon.

In all truth we know virtually nothing about whether Osorio and Gozo are any good as they have hardly played for us. At this point under Sage we have nothing to lose by giving Osorio an opportunity and seeing what we have. I think it is unlikely a new manager gives him lots of game time as the focus will be on organisation, work rate, being solid and relying on experienced players. That points to the likes of Kamada, Pino and McNeil.

What I’d say is it is amazing how players’ stock rises when they aren’t playing but the team is losing.

Gozo played for our Under 21's the other night in our 2-1 victory away at Newport County in the EFL Trophy.
“One for the future” because we are a club that can clearly afford to spend £11m on a player who won’t play for us, in a position where he is 7th choice, when we have gaps elsewhere in the squad. Also that future looks like being kicked to pieces in the Championship.

Another bad signing. Not because of the player but because it was a luxury buy at a time when badly needed to address basics in the first eleven.

I’d love him to come good in time but I would not be at all surprised if it ends up like Franca

Totally fair and I’m frustrated he’s not even getting time with the U21. I’ll keep an optimistic view on him but I can totally understand the irritation

Being American, it was probably to appease the US investors. For the US audience. We should send him on loan to a championship side.

I don't think it is fair though. There are load of complaints in other threads about the club 'not having a plan' with signings, but then when we do sign someone with a longer term vision in mind then it's a waste of money.

........and there are plenty of pundits and players/ex-players who have waxd lyrical about him wholst 11 mio is about the going rate for such prospects these days

To clarify my position it is not the signing of Gozo in isolation I take issue with. It’s the transfer strategy and signing him in this window when we had immediate needs elsewhere. If we had a stable squad with key positions covered and had signed him it would be a sensible signing. That’s what we did with Esse. Ok it didn’t work out but it that happens with young players.

As it is the signing has eaten up £11m we could have invested elsewhere. loan fees for actually decent players for example. Alternatively we could have saved that money to go towards the January window.

What we have now is a young player who won’t play much for us, in a position we had covered.

It’s all very well saying he is for the longer term but this window should all have been about the short term and this season as we are in a rebuild phase. He will be of very little value in the long term if we get relegated and he gets little game time. In that scenario we would probably struggle to even recoup our outlay.
