Nketiah?

Killer instinct looks like it is not at the requisite levels. I suspected as much at Arsenal where he went on a mini scoring run at the end of a season but where he was fed chances all day long.

The only real way we'll know for sure is if he has a run of games, up top, as a starter. But the Catch 22 is he needs to win the shirt first. There is no way he is displacing Eze, Sarr or JPM on current form.

I wouldn't say Sarr scores that all day. He missed a very similar one recently. But Nketiah has only found the net once in the league whilst his xG is 5. Hard to believe there is anyone worse in the league. He also did his usual trick of drifting into offside positions and committing pointless fouls. If Sarr is going to stay on the pitch when Mateta goes off I would rather he moved centrally with Esse on the right. And Franca hasn't had a sniff for a month

He's the biggest underperformer vs his xG in the whole division - 1 goal from 6.41 xG is beyond belief for a striker.

Problem is Eddie is brought on in many games with 30 minutes to go. That is the very time when our counterattacking qualities are most likely to reap rewards; and when we most need a confident and able striker to bury the couple of chances he is bound to be fed.

I cannot believe we pursued him for so long that there isn't something there. Please can the real Eddie Nketiah step forward.

Clearly his finishing has been awful. But our scouting and recruitment record should reassure us that there IS a player in there.
I think it’s all about confidence (especially with strikers) and sadly Eddie’s confidence is shot - at the moment.
His movement is good and he does work hard off the ball (I agree his needless fouls are infuriating) but I think he just needs the odd bounce of the ball to go his way to boost his confidence………maybe scoring the winner in the Cup Final will be the fairy tale boost to his confidence that he needs to jumpstart his Palace career.

Sanogo isn't even funny he's that bad. Nketiah is starting to become that way if he doesn't improve. The misses are starting to be unforgivable. There's barely any comedy value left in him.
Yes, at some point he needs to prove he’s a goal scorer rather than just a helpful forward player otherwise we need to move him on and let Franca flourish.

I'd prefer that Franca had the opportunities from the subs bench that Nketiah has had. I feel certain he would have done far better. They both cost a fair packet too, one has to start performing.

Agree!

If we are pulling JP after 60 mins I'd much rather stick Sarr up top and let France or Esse have a chance in the #10 roles.

Fair enough, but I thought Franca is a midfielder. Is he a striker? I know he took a good goal recently enough. When you consider it, you'd wonder if both Devenny and Franca - despite not being strikers - would score more goals? Which is pretty damning of Nketiah. I don't think the fans have much patience left for Nketiah. Maybe loan him out next season like the bigger boys would?

I wonder if there is something behind the scenes with Franca. His best position - on limited viewing - is in Eze's spot so it was surprising he did not get at least 15 minutes on Sunday to ensure Eze did not get injured. Add to that the fact that Ward was chosen over him for the semi-final squad and it all looks a little worrying

Am I the only one who has been worried by Mateta’s form and performance since he’s been wearing his ear-guard? I know it is a gamble but I’d start Nketiah against City. They wouldnt be expected to see him in the line up. Also, I can’t be the only one who is worried about the links about City and Wharton and Eze? Surely they’ll have their minds elsewhere???

Difficult situation to fully understand - you can guess all you want - but OG knows what he is doing - and in him I trust!

It took JPM a while, but what a striker he has turned out to be. I guess we should focus our energy on Saturdays game, finish the season and see what happens next!

I have a feeling the ear guard could be off on Saturday. Fingers crossed

The leap from 'Mateta is a bit off-form' to 'I would start the worst finisher in the league in our biggest game of the season' is HUGE.

Mateta has averaged a goal every other game across two seasons now and proved himself to be one of the best forwards in the league - the idea that we drop him for a bloke who has barely put together a good 45 minutes all season is genuine lunacy.

The difference for me is I don't remember JP ever missing chances to this extent - his slow starting Palace career was predominantly a result of Hodgson's tactics in which any striker would and did struggle to score goals.

Nketiah has joined a team performing well, creating loads of good chances, and still looks pants.

More bad luck than anything he's still scored 2 important goals (2 of his best in a palace shirt) and has hit the woodwork a few times and I believe he's had a few disallowed since the Millwall game. He's way too instrumental in our build up to not start and there's no way your saying nketiah is more of a threat up top.
