Nketiah?

It's a strange quirk of fate that if Nketiah had stayed at Arsenal he would have had more game time (and probably goals) than he has had at Palace.
Season ending injuries to Jesus and Havertz would have moved Nketiah into pole postion to start games.

I think there is a player there, but am not sure he suits our style- at least in the Mateta role.
He works hard, is mobile and makes good runs.
However, he is often muscled off the ball when he receives the ball and is not clinical when presented with chances.
He will get a better goal return at Arsenal because he's probably presented with 3 chances for every one chance he gets at Palace.

I agree with you.

I also agree with the point some have made that we paid the 'big club' premium for him which doesn't relate with returns.

To my mind he's a system specific player, which some forwards are, insomuch as due to their physical attributes they fit some systems more than others. I think he does better alongside another forward rather than as the target man.

I think he's a 'quality player' purchase, insomuch as like Henderson you buy quality when it's available and ask questions later. With goalkeepers being less of an issue with systems it worked out with Henderson (and I remember the initial criticism) but with Nketiah there may well have been a point to the puzzlement.

i presume he is banging in the goals on the training-pitch ?

So why the drought in the Prem ? its either a) he is not getting good service b) he is not good enough or c) bad luck or d) some esoteric 'system'-ology to do with the way we play versus what suits him best e) a question mark about his fitness......

honestly, its all very frustrating.

He looks like he takes his shots either too quickly - straight at keeper, or uses his feet too slowly allowing defenders to block. I agree with others about first touch. I would add in composure being a weakness. He looks like he needs to relax a bit.

I think this is right. I also think he was on a longer term watch list, unlike some other players who (1) become available and (2) the stars align to bring them to SE25 in the short term.

He seems to me to be better when he has less time to think. When he is put through on the goalkeeper, or somehow has time to weigh up his options, he seems to fluff his lines more often than you would expect. Maybe this is down to confidence or just the way he is wired.

Theo Walcott said he changed his game from hogging the centre to moving outside as well to get both chances and better positions. He muted Eddie should be trying this. Theo was a good player and is showing a bit of sense as a pundit.

Eddie has not had any sort of regular run as our starting striker. At the start of the season he was a starter, but out of position, and even when JP was injured I think he only had 1 Premier League game. I think it is really difficult to settle and find consistency in these circumstances. Of course JP should be 1st choice currently, but I think Eddie's a good player and will start to make a positive impact for us.

I think we have not had value for money so far. Mateta has turned into a striker that none of us could have anticipated and kept Nketiah out of the side. We are constantly told by managers that players need games to show their full potential. Nketiah has not been afforded that luxury due to the progress of Mateta. I think he is a much better player than our fans believe he is and will show it as we move forward. Just look at the progress Kamada has made he is becoming more and more influential the more he plays and I think the same will happen to Nketiah.COYP

I agree with this and the other comments - it feels like he is just trying "too hard", and things will come good when he relaxes a bit. I like the runs he is making and still hope he and JP can somehow click together to form another "Wright/Bright" type partnership as I can see similarities

Another consideration...did the purchase of Nketiah (and the competition for places that brings) contribute to JPs "step up" recently???

I'm of a mind that Nketiah would be effective alongside a big, physical partner up top.

Not going to happen under OG though.

As for JP, he was already '' stepping up '' before Eddie was signed.

Is it going to happen under anyone..?

Strike partnerships are basically dead at this level, hardly anyone plays with two up top.

Mateta was kept out by Edouard. Remember that?
