Sorry, but I'm not amazed by the delay because I don't see one. I see no reason to employ an out of work manager like Bournrmouth did. They're usually out of work because they've been sacked, so it made sense to see what the end of season would bring, especially as we won the ECL after the season finished making us a more attractive proposition to potential managers.
It's clear that Iraola was our no 1 choice but once Liverpool sacked Slot that option understandably disappeared.
We are now close to signing a manager still under contract at a club that pushed the double Champions League winners all the way in Ligue 1 and guided his club to their first ever French Cup. He seems a manager worth waiting for, if we get him.
Spot on.
I am always surprised at the attitude so often aired on here, that palace should have got a new manager or new players in place sooner.
It's not like buying something you need from a shop. Anyone good enough to improve us will have other options, which means no matter how quickly and decisively we act, that person is unlikely to commit to us immediately. They will wait and see if a bigger opportunity comes along first. We could start approaching managers a year in advance and it would make no difference.
What is it about this that people struggle with?
Once in a blue moon a very good manager is out of work and is happy to sign for us well in advance (Glasner). Mostly though, as an earlier post above so correctly stated, the price you pay for a quick appointment is lower quality. You can have an average manager immediately, if that's what you prefer, because they don't have as many other options. The idea that Bournemouth have shown us the way by signing Rose is bollocks. He's an average manager based on his record, as is Toppmoller. I'm not saying neither could do well, but neither have very strong CVs. It not like waiting to see who else you could get is madness.
If course, the risk of playing the game is that we get strung along all summer only to get let down, and end up with a late compromise (see the Nuno/Vierra summer), but we are nowhere near that situation. The club have obviously learnt from that, hence chasing Iraola wholeheartedly but also giving him a strict deadline.
Don't get me wrong, it would be nice to have the new man in place soon. It must help a bit in terms of planning etc, and I'm sure a new manager would make some contribution to transfer strategy. None of that is essential, though, as it's not the key part of the managers job anymore. That's why we have a director of football.
