Newcastle vs. Crystal Palace match thread

I'm not being Professor Hindsight but we were always going to lose tonight, and if we get anything at Arsenal next week I'll be amazed, and this is from Professor Foresight. My only gripe, cos these things happen, is that we currently need to rotate the squad a bit more to avoid 1) fatigue 2) becoming predictable and stale. Problem is we don't really have back up defenders but midfield and attacking wise we do have depth so why not use it? Team structure and strategy evolves throughout the season to avoid getting 'found out'. It's taken two top sides to find us out last two games, and I'm sure we'll have a few tweaks for the Villa game, but I'd like to see Devenny, Esse, Chilwell and Franca getting more starts and the regulars coming off the bench a bit more - a frustrated Eze as a 30 minute impact sub could get more out of him at times. Good to see Kamada getting good reviews though, maybe a suitable role for him could supply some of the freshness we currently seem to be lacking.

I was going stay for the another night in Newcastle, but just too disappointed and wanted to drive home.

A few thoughts…
1. Palace faithful were unbelievable! We kept on singing, supporting and at the end, the players appreciated it.
2. Our younger players in their cameo roles impressed. Esse especially…give the lad a start on Saturday!
3. When Eze has a bad game, the negative energy seems to affect the team performance.
4. On that display, our so called ‘star’ players looked bang ordinary when matched up against the Newcastle players.
5. And as painful as it is to say, Newcastle were a class above us last night. Their players must have been on something, as we couldn’t compete with their work rate.
6. Our final few games of the season were always going to be tough! Thank goodness we are safe!

Anyway, not a time to feel too sorry for ourselves or be over critical. A mid table finish is decent and we are off to Wembley.

Sleep time !!

Totally outplayed. An embarrassment. Accepting Newcastle going very well, I'm not certain I can even regard the game as a contest; Palace so poor in everything. Two maulings in a row. Probably Eze's poorest game in a Palace shirt, but no player can be proud of his contribution. (I did climb back into my Thai bed after the 5th!) The cause? - well, we all have thoughts about that. In all seriousness, I think the Club/players should consider a match ticket refund to those who travelled, it was that bad,but guess they'll feel that sends the wrong message! It has happened before, years back. An away game at Preston, when Palace might as well have put out cardboard cutouts!

Notable from the two games just passed and especially this one: the team didn't compete. No real intent to win challenges or dominate vital areas. One can be led to believe that the players have the semi on their minds, a natural subconscious reaction. It could be also that Glasner's predictable tactical set up has been rumbled. A mix of the two seems probable.
The larger pitch at Wembley will ask questions of how to best use the space available.
As for Eze, I've never rated him as highly as others, and that penalty reinforced my thoughts: slapdash and sloppy with a dash of arrogance. I much prefer a player who rates a base minimum 7/10 every game, Jimmy Mac was a fine example of that, rather than one who turns it on every so often.
Glasner should use the remainder of the season to give the likes of Esse and Franca more game time, although that said I think we saw yesterday the team that will step out at Wembley, perhaps with Wharton instead of Lerma.
Point being they need to get their act together, including the manager, because shipping 5 goals in two consecutive matches is totally unacceptable.

Just watched the rerun and I wish I'd gone to the beach instead. What a shoite show. I think some of the players have been believing the recent hype surrounding them and I hope they feel well and truly humbled now. That was a cringeworthy penalty by Eze. He should just take free kicks and leave the penalties to Mateta or Sarr. I hope OG has got a plan to sort this mess out because the players confidence will have taken a big hit from the last two games. I'd like to see Esse and Franca given some proper game time in the next fixture as I'm sure they'll be up for it.

Such a s*** show you have to wonder what the hell has happened. Is it:
They know OG may ,eave?
They know the team is going to be split up?
There are off field issues affecting the whole club?
They are just knackered?
Minds on semi final?
I don’t know but it was embarrassing how poor we were. I thought Eze, even without the penalty, was a disgrace. The normally sound defensive unit was all over the place.
I have been very much looking forward to Wembley but can’t say I am now

Our 343 system has done well in recent months, and I don’t see Glasner changing it.
In fact he alluded to as much after the Man City game saying you don’t throw away what you have been working on all season.

That being said, there is a glaring weakness in it for better teams to exploit.
There are 40 yard gaps behind our full backs when they push forward which the opposition can exploit.
We saw this time and time again last night with Trippier and Murphy down the right and Livramento and Barnes down the left.
Nether Wharton nor Hughes have the athleticism to cover the spaces and usually resort to fouling players to prevent being bypassed which can lead to bookings putting them in jeapordy for the remainder of games.
The ball was continually knocked behind Munoz and Mitchell for Murphy and Barnes to have a free run without a challenge.
Good players will punish you when afforded such space and time.

On the assumption that we retain the system, I would like to see our wing backs sit deeper until we get a proper foothold in the game .

I know it sounds a bit Roy like , and would curtail our attacking threat ( particularly Munoz) , but I think the wing backs need to be more selective when they break forward.
Villa have loads of pace down the sides and would be licking their lips at being given the space that was available last night.

Insightful analysis which has gained my seal of approval.

I suspect that many of our supporters who believed that we could emerge victorious are now of a different mindset.
Two horror shows and a possible defeat against Bournemouth, just the tonic for the Semi-Final !
I had a fit of the vapours and was in a state of apoplexy after witnessing last night's capitulation.I am still steaming akin to a cooked clam. 😡 😡 😡

You forgot that we are also away to Arsenal...

I did feel, last night, that the usual bond, camaraderie, call it what you will, was missing. No smiles, very little inter-reaction other than a bit of shouting of instructions and pointing. I think that something has happened behind the scenes - it'll come out in the end if it has.

Just watched the Newcastle site's (on Youtube) highlights, and got as far as their second goal which was very well worked. A couple of Palace players attempt to press in midfield, the Newcastle player bypasses them completely with a simple pass down the channel for which the wideman raced onto in acres of space. Easy as that folks.
Just before that we had the Eze penalty embarrassment. Now here's a player who can find the top corner from a 30 yard free kick, yet with the penalty runs up slowly, does a little foot stomp dance, stops, trickles the ball straight to the keeper. Too clever by half. My honest advice: practise hitting it hard and low into the corner. Watch videos of Francesco Totti's penalty technique. Better still, let someone else take them.

Don't worry Fans, i haven't been washed away in the Costa Floods, but just really disgusted with the performance and attitude by the players, The Glasner system will never work, if it was great every team would be playing it, not only us and Man Utd, we have a lot of very good players, that is why we have had a good run, Eze (my hero) was pathetic, disgraceful penalty, we are IMO hindered by our formation, always out numbered when we play a 4-3-3 team, when Eze leaves he will play the No 10 role, i would leave him out in Glasners formation, put Sarr on the left and give Franca a run on the left, or even better play 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-1-1, but that will not happen.

I’m glad I’m not the only one! Great timing, whatever it is

Stats wise it flattered them, not that they didn't deserve a win, although much of our play came when it was all over.

2 events: Sarr passing wide to Munoz not the touch forward right to Mateta was TERRIBLE. He was in and would've likely buried it, at 0-0. And Eze's awful penalty, I knew he'd miss and called it. But it must be on Glasner because he should know that you DON'T LET CONFIDENCE PLAYERS TAKE PENALTIES. You need the mentality of a tour golfer, a numb mind to the past, and that's why JP bangs them in. Maybe a different outcome.

Then out of their 7 on target they score 5, with a total xG of a paltry 1.54 (less than our xG), that's nearly as ridiculous as when they drew at ours 1-1 with 1 off target shot. I think that their second summed it up, shooting from a crazy angle and it was in, nobody expected that especially on the pattern of play with the constant crossing.

Over the course of the game though Glasner was tactically beaten. They played 4-3-3 and occupied our back 3, then used the width on the break whilst Mitchell and Munoz were up the pitch. Glasner must've played Lerma instead of Wharton for more bit in the middle because of that middle 3, but it didn't work at all, we had less bite into them because Lerma is a bad passer (not that Wharton had a good game). I think their third goal came from Lerma giving a pass to Hughes which he couldn't do anything with when a better player would've cycled it elsewhere resulting in Hughes trying to thread it and they broke with us well camped forward. Our passing out was really bad, and relied on hope a lot, so we invited pressure on ourselves and we got deep because their breaks wide were so dangerous. I can't help but think that we actually NEEDED a formation change for this game - Rock, Paper, Scissors - the 4-3-3 is a big counter to 3-4-3, I'd have matched it or played 4-5-1.
