New Year's Honours List

I thought I would have my annual moan about this.

Personally I would abolish the honours system as any reform will soon be corrupted by the great and the good. For every MBE for NHS cleaner there are dozens of CBE's for highly paid public officials and politicians, donors, celebrities etc.

Nothing personal against these individuals but you do wonder:

Torvill and Dean - made a great deal of money after starting their careers with money from Nottingham council (did they ever pay it back?).

Idris Elba - A knighthood for his campaign against knife crime. I quite like Idris but how's that campaign going? Knife crime down? Do we now give out awards to people just for trying?

Kate and Williams nanny gets a gong. "Woman brings up another woman's kid

Matt Lucas "Cos he's the only gay in the village"

Phil Spencer who? bloke off C4 daytime TV, yeah really worth it.

Some bird from Corrie

Etc.

No doubt all of their agents will point out their tireless work promoting themselves err I mean charitable causes which apparently people who are not celebrities never do.

And then of course having thrown a few crumbs to the plebs the real stuff, gongs all around for the Civil Service and politicians and their donor friends.

Yuk

A short while ago, a close friend was nominated for an honour linked to incredible voluntary work helping local NHS through Covid, which continues to this day, helping particular groups of recovering patients. She did not get any honour, but an invite to a Royal Garden Party instead. I went too. A lovely day and various Royals came up and said hello to the incredible gathering of volunteers who had received the same invite as my friend. None of the volunteers there received an honour; the garden party seemed a kind of 2nd prize and it was very nice in its own way. When I see the list of people receiving honours on this year's list and compare some of them to my friend, and other volunteers I met on that day, and see how famous and well rewarded many of today's recipients already are for their roles and jobs, I too question this system. Maybe it's impossible to avoid political bias etc with the present system-even when those who have voluntarily served communities are in line for awards?
