So Palace's answer to that should be 'so dont buy him then'. Since when did we agree a transfer fee with clubs based on what they might or might not get for him when they sell him? If they dont want to pay what Palace want they wont get him. Unless there is a release clause but this I do not believe
That's always going to be a consideration for any buying club.

If there's no release clause then I agree with you - I think he's probably worth more to us than I can see a buying club being prepared to pay.

One of those one where I'd rather keep him and lose the £8m we paid for him, than sell him and gain an extra £17m
True, however we don't want to get a reputation for being a club that doesn't allow players to leave. If that happens they wont sign for us.

Better to be seen as a club where players can make their names and get a move to the top 6 club if the fee is correct.

I am convinced that all players will soon have to have a release clause in their contracts so we might as well get used to it.

100%

Its a bit painful, but its the way of the world. And at the minute, being an excellent shop window for international football and/or the best clubs in the world is a great place to be.

The next step for us is to be pushing for Europe, then it will be a hell of a lot easier to attract better players and keen better players.

Yes. Being a "stepping stone" club in this league offers its own attraction to the world's best young players.

This is a lesson that I learnt when I had a proper job. It was best to celebrate staff that were able to better themselves through earning much more elsewhere or be offered a better role than we could. I tried to be happy and accept that maybe I might get 2 or 3 good years out of these people. The alternative was to try and keep hold of people that were unhappy and that could affect the whole team.

That is where succession planning is so important. I think there are definitely parallels with how a lot of football clubs have to operate. We need to get in a Dougie Mk 2 quickly.

Release clauses are compulsory in Spanish football but Real Madrid and Barcelona get around that by setting it at €1 bn for players they want to keep which sort of defeats the purpose.

Yeah it's an interesting model for transfers/contracts - it doesn't always work out for Madrid/Barca though, PSG activated Neymar's 200m release clause which was not at all part of Barca's plan.

Yup however the player has to agree. If you agree a release clause absurdly high then that is on you. The whole point of the CAS judgement which UEFA lost was that the player was not told in advance what the cost of exiting his contract would be, which is why they lost.

I've said this many time whenever football is in court it almost always loses as it's contracts and way of doing business is anti competitive.

UEFA also lost out over banning the super league there is no legal impediment if the top clubs wish to leave the Champion League.

Transfer windows in my opinion are also illegal. If willing clubs and players want to move why should this be restricted, it wouldn't happen in normal employment.

While I agree completely this would not stand up in court if challenged but I dread to think what will happen to smaller clubs if it ever was. Its hard enough building a strong team that can compete as it is without the big wealthy clubs being able to tap up, unsettle and ultimately buy your best players 24/7

Yup but don't forget football survived before the Transfer Window, it's not that old.

I think the only reason the window has survived so far is that most people think it works so let sleeping dogs lie.
