Missing Guehi ?

Maybe i'm wrong and maybe it doesn't matter but I thought that it was actually Chadi Riad that was earmarked for the ledt of a three and Canvot on the right. However, if we play a back four next season it will be back to drawing board. Who out of possibly 4 (assuming Lacroix doesn't get temoted away) CB's fits bewteen two full-backs? Of course that sets the next question, is Munoz a) staying and/or 2) cut out for a normal non-wing-back role? Questions questions.

Well I did say when I saw him he is young and very promising when he played , yes made mistakes people on here was questioning why the he'll we brought him another bad buy so on and so on , said give him time yes still has mistakes in him , but each game he plays can only see him getting better , 3 years time reckon he will be a France regular , but everyone needs to except his mistakes long as its no more than one a match

Any very good player will, of course, be missed. He was by all accounts a very good influence around the place. That is hard to replace. I attach a great deal of weight to the fact that our remaining players have seen Olise, Eze, and Guehi all move on to higher things whilst they are left behind. I think that is a big part of why Palace spent big on Larsen and Johnson - to reassure the existing players. Add all that up and, of course, the loss of Guehi is impactful.

At the same time, I always felt he was perhaps an imperfect fit for Palace.

His skills involve use of the ball, speed on the turn, and being good in 1v1s. Those are all very helpful if you are a big club who dominate possession, push your defensive line high up, and take a few risks to win games. We are none of those things. A lot of what Guehi is very good at, we didn't often need.

Guehi isn't a giant, and isn't amazing in the air. We often play deep and compact, so will face more crosses and high balls into the box. There was a long period under Hodgson where the left side of our back four was especially vulnerable to back post crosses as Mitchell isn't tall, and Guehi isn't strong enough in air to compensate for that. There were times when a more old-school, taller, slower centre back might actually have helped.

I also feel that in a back three its the guy in the centre who gets the best chance to show how good he is. The guys on either side tend to get put in position by the central one, acting more as markers. They don't often get to sweep up behind a colleague in the way they would if playing with two centre backs. They go in and mark tight, the ball gets played over them, and its the central one who looks like he is reading the game well as he comes over and covers. In fact, the three defenders have arranged it that way. That doesn't mean that any old player can be used on the sides of the three, but look at how much it suits Richards. He is not in Guehi's price range in a million years, but we have never been any weaker down his side than Guehi's. I felt that whereas Eze and Olise were utterly irreplaceable, Guehi was not, as a less talented player could probably do a reasonable job in his place.

I think that is what we are seeing with Canvot and Riad. Both have done well enough that we can hope for them to kick on next year. I don't, however, think that either looks like they could yet be trusted in the middle of a back four without that assurance of a spare defender behind them.

If the new manager plays a back three then we will not miss Guehi too much. Canvot and Riad can carry on developing with the safety net of the spare defender behind them. If we move to a back four then there will be times one of the centre backs gets beaten, or gets the run-around from a top forward, or makes an error, where Guehi simply wouldn't have. We will really notice his absence then.

I don't agree with that at all. To my eyes he looked quality for all his inexperience and, crucially, he was played out of position on the right when his left - footedness lends itself much more to being on the left of the three; as demonstrated of late. Also, in that position he can gain vital knowledge under the stewardship of Tyrick: no better tutor.

Canvot is right-footed - when Lacroix got injured yesterday, Canvot played on the right and Riad (left-footed) on the left.

Despite that, like Guehi Canvot is good at opening up his body to be able to find forward passes on his right foot, despite being on the left of the pitch.

He looks a hell of a prospect.

He made some crass errors if you remember right, but you are right in everything else, plus I except he was thrown in at the deep end earlier than expected in his career with us, which may now have done him some good

His passing is very good - he's trying to pick a man and not just belting Hail Mary 40 yarders.
If he fills out any more he'll be bouncing them off on his runs. If Doucoure ever gets back we'll have a couple of powerhouse runners.

His passing is good! The third goal against Spurs had a beautiful Wharton assist to Sarr but the pass from Canvot to Wharton bisecting two opposition players was just as good
