Michael Olise

I still think of him as one of ours. I wonder if Reading do too? I can't believe we sold him so cheaply.
Believe it. He went for his release clause. I can't believe City didn't sign him a year earlier when his release clause was 30million, I believe. Instead, they extended Mahrez for another year

Olise is player of the tournament for the moment .
Deserved a goal with that bicycle kick .
How England could have done with him .
But who could blame him for choosing this incredible French team .
He's been outstanding this tournament, with the only thing letting him down is his lack of Goals. had 3 or 4 chances last night, I'd have put my house on him scoring at least 2 of them. His overall play though is immense. decision making, pass accuracy and invention, all top notch.
How can we get him back in a palace shirt ? 🤣

Sage will use his French connection.

Watching the world cup (and previously the champions league), Olise has simply gone to another level since he left Palace, he is without doubt world class.

Watching the France games, you could say he is the player that makes France tick at the moment. His assists and contributions are significant.
Shame that scissor kick have went in against Sweden, that would have been some goal.

Not saying that without him France would struggle as they have far too many other exceptional players as well, ie. Barcola coming in looked awesome as well.

Before his senior competitive international debut, he could have played for 4 countries, France, Algeria, Nigeria and England (the country of his birth).

To my knowledge (and I stand behind corrected here), England made no attempt to really try and persuade him to play for England (remember, Southgate was manager back then).

Now ask yourself, who would England rather have at this WC cup, Olise or Saka ? (With the exception of deluded Arsenal fans, who still think Saka is truly world class).

I know that Olise only played for France youth teams, so that probably indicates his intentions, but it seems England didn't even bother trying to persuade him.

One of the few players that makes you watch games at present.

Why would we know about it if they had though? You'd assume those sort of conversations go on all the time without fans being made aware.

I'd be very surprised if England didn't make an approach at some stage. But also it seems like Olise was very set on France from quite a young age, and in those cases there isn't much more to discuss!

His first French camp was their U18 squad in 2019 when he was still at Reading, so I don't think England ever really had a sniff.

Olise: "I have always had a connection with the France national team, that is why I play for France. It's been my dream since I was a kid. "

Yes indeed , my post gives impression that it was a recent decision.
Probably grew up on doses of Zidane and clips of the 98 team .
That and his mum being Algerian French .2018 win probably sealed it .
Sure I read somewhere that his French is not very good and that he conducts many interviews in France in English.

As mentioned previously I cannot understand why England didn’t make any real effort to get him into the England set up - I wonder if he would have chosen England if he was sufficiently “wooed”?

You don't know that they didn't.

Of course not - it is all subjective and speculation - I don’t remember anything in the press that indicates that a serious attempt was made.

I just don't think that stuff really gets reported, particularly when the conversations probably happen at youth level before the player is even worth reporting on!

Olise was already representing France youth teams before he joined us.

Playing like he does I wouldn’t be bothered if he spoke Klingon if I were French 😂
