Mateta’s Value

Because of the way young lads are coached these days with 'false 9s', playing with two no.10s, High press, packed midfields etc out and out centre forwards are becoming rarer and rarer. Its no surprise that anyone these days that puts a run of 10 or more goals together is being quoted in the £50m+ bracket. I mean look how desperate Arsenal and West Ham currently are for a striker.

Personally, within reason I'd give JPM what he wants to extend. I'm not convinced by Nketiah and I think he would be very difficult to replace. I can think of a few clubs (some very big ones) that would love to have him. I can see a big bid coming for him in the summer if he hasn't extended and his form continues.
It may not just be about money though. I’m sure I read somewhere that he wants to play at a higher level e.g Champion’s League or at least in a team that might have the potential to play in that competition. That is not something we can realistically offer.

I believe he has said that especially as he wants to make the French National Team as well.

He’ll be 28 in the summer. Hard to see him getting into the French team to be honest even with a move to a top 6 side, but if it’s going to happen he has to move this summer. If he’s still here come the start of next season he might as well sign a new contract. Not sure why he didn’t sign one this year with a release clause. It would have been a win-win for him.

We need to get him onto a proper contract or his value is only going one way!

Assuming he does sign, which I think is more likely than not, I think a £50-60m fee feels about right.

The logical reason for Palace triggering the option in Jean-Philippe's contract to keep him until June 2027 is because he didn't want to sign a new contract. Which of course we would love him to sign.

Interesting as he'll be 30 at the end of this contract. So it doesn't necessarily suit him to run it down as he may not get a big move at that age even on a free.

So he'll be looking for a move either this summer or next when the transfer level would be lower. But we are in Zaha territory here with Mateta being worth far more to us than anyone else will pay.

If he maintains his amazing positive attitude I wouldn't mind at all having him seeing out his contract. We may lose out on the transfer fee but the extra points he got us last year at the end of the season was worth, what £10m + just on league position, and it could be the same again this year if he carries on his current form.

It's really hard to buy good strikers. Though Bournemouth and Brentford seem to have done alright.

I think it telling that we extended his contract and rather than sulk he has gone on a goal scoring run.

If he does want to leave his attitude is spot on as he is playing his way out of the club. Of course I hope he stays and he gets the contract he wants.

Just a little clickbait snippet . . .

Things are on the move then, that's good. Mateta has improved in leaps and bounds since he started when he looked awkward with his long, gangly legs seemingly out of control. Most of us were very critical of his performances early on. We have to thank Ollie for making a better player out of him.

We need to tie him down with a decent contract so trust Mr P to do the biz. If he stays fit and keeps scoring we can expect clubs to show an interest in the summer. Whether they can offer him European football is another matter.

He should be on more than Nketiah and if not then at least the same. £40,000 a week less doesn't reflect his value to the club in any way.

i have always marveled at how the same players can be brilliant or awful......depending on the manager and what service said players are getting.

i was with you. In the early days i thought Mateta to be deadwood. Glad all Over to be proven wrong.

Strikers need a run of starts before they can show what they can do, and as I've said on previous posts, Mateta didn't get that benefit until Edouard got injured in the Liverpool game in December 2023. The rest is history. Having said, the Glasner factor moved him up a level or three, although he'd started to show his worth in the last couple of months of Hodgson's tenure.

The improvement towards the end of the Hodgson era is often overlooked.
