What has happened to him? He had stated to look like an effective striker but now he's fast becoming Benteke II. Lack of confidence in front of goal? Is he missing the openings created by Eze and before that Olise? We badly need him firing on all cylinders once more.

to the tune of ....'my old man's a dustman'

oohhh , our Eagle's Mateta
he kicks the corner Flag
and then tucks in his Trousers
the game is in the bag

His hold up play is awful. He seems to run towards the ball then when it’s going over his head can’t get off the ground. He’s clumsy with the ball at his feet and at corners doesn’t have a striker’s instinct to pick up the second balls.

We massively lack creativity up front he's not really getting much from either side of him.
But he also isn’t able to win the ball, hold it up or pass to anyone as he used to do. I agree it’s harder with whoever plays either side of him at the moment but he isn’t the player he was or should be anymore. We had Nketia before his injury and Uche who should both of been given chances at centre forward replacing him but Glasner won’t do it and we as a team are suffering more because of it?

Clearly Glasner's game plan revolves around Mateta working away up front, but like a poor donkey he's been overworked. Glasner either doesn't trust the subs or doesn't have an alternative plan; probably a bit of both. Obviously why the club are prepared to splash out £35m on a new striker.

It's unreasonable to expect Mateta to occupy an opposition back 4 entirely on his own, be back in his own half as first line of defence, and still get on the end of the rare opportunities that come his way.

He's playing like he did under Hodgson as the team is currently playing like it did under Hodgson i.e 10 behind the ball, with the two number 10s rarely within 25 yards of him.

I'm hoping it will change with the return of Sarr and Munoz and hopefully with the addition of Johnson, three far more forward minded players that drive forward and put opposition defences under far more pressure than they have been in recent weeks.

It's no secret Mateta has been carrying an injury for a while now. He did his job today and scored a goal. He will hit a purple patch soon.
He was grimacing, looking pained near the end but not taken off? Maybe he will get a rest for a wee while when BJ signs tomorrow !

Demonstrates how Munoz and Sarr's surging runs are the bread and butter for JP. He and Wharton really need to get in synch to spring the trap

He’s knackered. Also looks much better with people running off him and making him less isolated. Neither Pino nor Deveney make runs in behind so JPM is left on his own. Any striker would look a bit ineffective in those circumstances. He took his goal well yesterday and made some decent runs all be it was offside a lot. I think he will look much better once he has some pace and attacking intent alongside him in the front three and our main creator of chances in Munoz back

Great to see him scoring again but he actually almost missed it. Considering he had 3/4 of the goal to aim at, went for too much power and put it back towards the goalie. Luckily it went underneath him, so avoided one of the misses of the season.

Whilst he's definitely off the pace at the moment, he is still a quality striker and integral to our system.

I would rest him for Newcastle (in the same way Leeds did with DCL yesterday despite him being in hot form) so he's firing for Villa

Leeds had the luxury of bringing in Lukas Nmecha who had scored 3 goals in his previous 5 games.
Nmecha is essentially a centre-forward so a direct replacement for Calvert-Lewin.

From Saint to Sinner how fickle can we be, would we be happy to see Mateta leave Palace. I am sure some do and feel spending £35m on a Spurs reserve will solve all our problems in front of goal. I hope Brendan Johnson becomes the player he wants and we want him to be.

I’m not judging Mateta negatively any more than I am any of our cup winners for their indifferent form in December, just think he looks knackered. I’ve been wanting him rested and Uche (or Nketiah when he was fit) tried for weeks.

Maybe with Johnson coming in it is worth keeping him in on Sunday as it feels like ages he has pace up alongside him. I’d be bringing Uche on for him on 60 minutes as a default though.
