Mateta

I would put money on the Forest story being a ploy to mess with his head before Sunday. They've just signed another striker and already have Wood and Jesus on the books. Is it really just coincidence that this week they suddenly show an interest? I doubt it.

JP's finishing has been terrible most of this season, but he still has a good relationship on the pitch with Sarr and if we're sticking with the current system, he's important to it, so personally I'd still rather he were here come 2nd Feb than someone else's cast off.

I concur, I'm 99.99% sure this is pure shithousery from the fat Greek.

Yep I said something similar yesterday. Don't trust that plump fella one bit.

And I fully agree. Our best chance of improving is with Mateta finding his form as the relationship is already there with Sarr's return. To sell him to a rival and then take a punt on a new striker and expect them to hit the ground running is a huge ask.

Totally agree we can’t sell him to a rival. That would be crazy.

He’s been rubbish recently but we can’t weaken the squad further. We need him at the moment for cover if nothing else. Personally I would drop him, play Sarr up top and keep him as a player to bring on with 20 mins to go, but I wouldn’t be selling right now.

If it is a wind up from Forest it is daft. JPM is in terrible form. Why give him and the club any ammunition that might change that?

Mateta seems a likeable character, and I suspect he played a key role in the positive group dynamics of the cup-winning team. At his best he holds the ball up well, brings others into the game and, of course, gets a decent number of goals.

When I say a decent number, its worth remembering that he got 16 league goals in 23/24, 14 goals last season, and has 8 so far this season. For context, the only people to get those kind of numbers since we got promoted are Zaha with 14 (21/22) and Benteke with 15 (16/17). Otherwise, you have to go all the way back to Andy Johnson (21 goals 04/05) and then back to the early 90s with Wright, Bright, and Armstrong to find a Palace forward with 15 or more top flight league goals. Accepting of course that we haven't always been in the top flight, that still shows how hard a regular goalscorer is to come by.

At the same time, I find it hard to get past the old saying that form is temporary, class is permanent. For me, Olise, Eze, and Guehi were all class, but Mateta has just been in great form. He has done really well when supported by the best creative attacking talents Palace could ever hope to have, and far less well otherwise, including a couple of years of really stinking the place out before coming good. He is turning 29 at the end of this season. Even if he had three or four years left on his contract there would be a decent case for selling him now, at his peak value.

In telling the club he won't be signing a new deal he has done the decent thing by Palace, who can now make plans. The question is what should those plans be? I cannot believe Palace would sell to Forest under any circumstances, but certainly not when they are near us in the table. I would rather take a bit less money from someone else.

The timing of the sale doesn't matter hugely (now or summer) IF reinforcements are secured in advance. This is not like Geuhi, where we had to sell now even without someone lined up. If we sell Mateta now and do not spend the money in a way that obviously improves the team, that could not only make the team weaker, but also undermine morale.

Right now, I don't think a direct replacement for Mateta is necessarily what we need. I don't see the attraction of the boy at Wolves, for instance. We are struggling to create anything. We need a clever, jinky dribbler with an eye for an assist, or more creativity in centre midfield. Even if we get a good striker in, as things stand they will find chances hard to come by.

Plus, either now or in the summer we need to reshuffle the pack a bit. We have spent a lot on Nketiah and Johnson, not to mention Pino, and cannot write them off. I would be happy for Nketiah to have a run at No9. Johnson plainly cannot play as a No10. He might do a better job up front, or wide right in a different system. Both players have decent pedigree. I doubt the next manager will play the same system as Glasner now that so many of the key parts have moved on. Without taking anything for granted this season, the Mateta sale/spending money issue must be assessed with at least one eye on the future, and that future must include getting value out of the existing investments.

You have to hope the three you mention (in bold) will be better under our new manager in there correct positions. Plus we have Sarr, Esse and perhaps Rak Saki to make up 6 forward players to choose from. And Uche if kept on? A new manager will be spoilt for choices, unlike Glasner who either doesn’t want to play some of them or plays them out of position.

i considered Mateta a real force when he's on form. And even with the odd mis-fire he seemed to offer some leadership up top.
His form is really poor at the moment. Whatever the reason, it sometimes happens with strikers. Hoping he gets back to scoring soon. (not just Mateta, but they all need a few days practising in front of goal) 🙂
As for a possible move, this is likely to be originating from his (new) agent. Agents get paid the biggest wedge on transfers. Wage negotiations and % of a players wage keeps the cash-flow, but you can see why agents are always keen to sell players to get the big payday. The worst case scenario is the players stays, but normally on a bigger wage.
This is why football agents really pished SJ off.

Hello! This is just a ploy to unsettle the player before a 6 pointer.

We don't want to be selling anyone right now. We need more players in, not out.

We can offload in the summer.

We need to feel the force.

Looking from the outside the club looks to have dropped the ball over recent months.
When Freedman was appointed in his role he was given authority at the club over all football related matters from youth development, scouting, coaching set up through to transfers.
Parish was very much concerned with the CEO role encompassing plans for the new stand, boardroom operations, relationships with the football authorities and finances/budgets.
Obviously Freedman had to work within these parameters.
After Freedman went there was the Europa debacle to deal with which took up much of Parish's time
Notwithstanding this, in Freedman's absence the scouting team reported through to Parish and the club seemed trapped in inertia.
In the summer the late deals, the Guehi fiasco, the Glasner interviews calling out the broken commitments.
I don't think we recovered from any of this.
The long unbeaten run just masked the problems.
Matt Hobbs's role is still unclear as apparently he is on a short term contract with a brief nowhere near as wide as the Freedman one.
As I said, this is looking from the outside and I may be wrong in some of the conclusions but I'd be surprised if the diagnosis was far off the mark.

SJ looks like he's been indulging on the pies a bit. Just saying 😀

Still got a sharp mind, (SJ) seems to talk sense, but he had his chance and made a few crucial enemies at the wrong time. SJ makes it sound simplistic, and it helps to look at things like this.
But agents, players wishes/demands. other clubs unsettling players,...and pishing off people, all go into the mix.
