Mateta

He's reportedly on £50k a week, which in Prem terms is pretty small fry.

A France international who has only been outscored by Haaland, Salah and Isak over the past 2.5 seasons is surely worth a huge pay rise on that?
Yes but that means signing a new contract and he has chosen not to.

I think people are jumping the gun a bit here. Just because he wants a move to Serie A, doesn't mean he wants out right now, and doesn't even mean he "doesn't want to be here". He can still have love for Palace even if his dream is elsewhere.
I know it's been a wacky couple of weeks but people need to take a chill pill.
I also can't see the board selling two crucial players in one window.

have you ever negotiated a pay rise , you find people who will pay more for you , then thats your starting point
That's what normal workers do. Players have agents who like to facilitate transfers in order to earn big bucks. Maybe an agent has suggested a figure to Mateta in order to get leverage. There's loads of ifs, buts, and whataboutery where agents are concerned.
I hope the Board finds a buyer and f*** him off.

If someone is willing to pay £35/40 million quid for JP then he goes with my best wishes (ONCE WE HAVE A REPLACEMENT IN THE BUILDING).

It was stupid, really stupid to sell MG before we brought in a replacement and to do the same with JP would be an amazing act of self harm from the board……….unless of course they are trying to force Ollie to quit!

I think we're in for a major wake-up call over the next year or so, and the ongoing calls for us to actively dismantle our best ever team will not age well.
I don’t think anybody wants to dismantle our squad.. but somebody needs to explain that to the manager and players because it is them that want out.

I can only speak for myself but I just don’t want a player or manager here that does not want to be here. End of.

Let him go. Everyone has his price, as we've seen. Useless under Hodgson, temporarily wonderful under Glasner, his purple patch must have come as a wonderful surprise to Mateta himself. It'll be the irony of the century if he fetched more money than Guehi, but that's just the funny farm that football economics is. Our Cup Final success has created a team full of malcontents and certainly a manager, who think they are too good for Palace. Good riddance. The Cup success means it was worth it, but Palace fans who used to slide down the mud on the Holmesdale knew it was a temporary blip.

Oh, Munoz will be next.

  1. We bought 2 CBs as potential replacements for Guehi (Riad and Canvot)
  2. In the ideal world Riad wouldn't have been injured for the past year and would have shown us what he could do by now.
  3. in the ideal world Guehi would have been willing to sign a year's extension so we could have longer to see how the 2 youngsters would fare and get some money back for him, but he didn't.
  4. We buy players like Guehi with a view to selling them for a profit when they've matured.
  5. We can't afford to let such players go for nothing.
  6. Despite Guehi's presence over the last 10 games, we've still been in freefall.
  7. His departure is unlikely to be the difference between staying in the Prem and relegation.
In other words, I don't see selling Guehi for £20m plus add-ons and a sell-on clause as being at all stupid.

I think there are a number of issues in play here.

Firstly, Mateta hasn't been able to agree a new contract. That usually means he's asking for more than the club want to pay him. Fair enough. We can sell him in the summer and get both a decent fee and ( maybe I'm being over optimistic here ) a replacement for him.

But I think there's something else. I think there are now a number of players that believe the club has reached its glass ceiling. Mateta being one of them. Obviously the Glasner situation has brought this into sharp focus.

So now I question whether as a group the players believe that they can still go on to win the Conference League this season. The campaign has been far from as smooth as we would have hoped and liked, and with everything else going on it's possible that some don't see competing for that is reason enough to stay.

JP could in theory stay until the end of the season, help the club towards its targets and still get his big money move in the summer. So why is he so reluctant to do that ?
