Mateta and Nketiah

I agree. I have similar sentiments on another thread. Back to basics 4-4-2 or a 4-4-1-1 hard to beat.

It just seems to be crying out for them to be a front two, they have everything between them, a bit more direct, and a back four, Guehi, Chalobah, Lacroix and Richards, Lerma and Doucoure, Sarr and Eze wide
A lot of recent complaints are of playing players out of position... this formation and team would have 4 players playing out of position and little to no balance. It reminds me of the kind of setup that Roy got absolutely battered for in the past. I'm also in shock you've suggested playing your beloved Eze out of position on the wing!

I am afraid Eze is not performing great, The idea is to get the best 11 on the pitch, with Wharton off form, Mitchell off form, Muñoz injured, i think 442 with the best 11 players is IMO what is needed, but you have to get Sarr, Eze, Mateta and Nketiah on the pitch, then 3 out of the four would be in position IMO

We need points. It's time to play some Royball so that we move up the table...

Henderson
Clyne LaCroix/Chalboah Guhei Mitchell
Sarr Lerma Hughes Schlupp
Nketiah
Mateta

Not pretty but I think we'd be a lot tighter, more competitive and maybe get something on the break.

Anyone going to say that Nketiah has looked a dud so far?

I thought, just an opinion, that it was worthwhile that Glasner started with Nketiah over Mateta. Largely, my opinion has been that Mateta has been sulking all season. Did he get a kick up the backside by being dropped? It was his best recent performance against Liverpool, in my opinion. He really busted a gut.
I thought Nketiah ran around a lot. A couple of decent touches but, his offside for the opener was frankly childlike. He then ran around looking lightweight the whole game. I'm sorry but running around may be part of football but being able to read a game, pass and score also are likely factors.
He's pretty much looked like that every game.

Add in lazy Sarr, unable to read the game too. Two poor fullbacks in a back five and then wonder what the hell we are doing. Even Henderson, Eze and Wharton have been rubbish all season. What's dragging us down? Is it dressing room unrest, Mateta part of that?

I just cannot see Glasner giving them a Rollicking, or similar, I don't want Roy back, but he had a vicious temper, he looks like a philosophy Lecturer.

Not so sure on that. He seemed willing enough to deal with Holding. Is that, rather laughably, part of the squad problem? Holding with a chip on his shoulder? I thought it seemed unlikely but am now reaching for explanations.
Personally, I'd be dropping useless players quick enough. How many chances do they need? I'd rather blood a youngster than watch overpaid, over entitled dross.

Got to be both they are the main men,and use subs earlier in the 2nd half.To keep the energy of the team moving
Midfield defence too many changes resulting in chaos
Team bears no resemblance to last year's because of it.
Wharton must wonder why he came it's a different setup he has no protection. He showed he can play give him support. Hughes got a new contract because he earned it his energy is needed at the beginning not the chase.
Oliver must realise he's making repeat mistakes.
Or are those around him just agreeing with him.
Because he wont be sacked on his own.

Moving to a back four makes sense, especially if Munoz is out, but I think away to Forest a 433/451 might be less of a leap. Just for kicks, maybe something like this which could allow Wharton to push on when we have the ball with Lerma and Chalobah both being physical and offering good defensive cover. Eze and Sarr would need to put more of a shift in. JP showed no signs of sulking when he came off the bench which is a good sign. Nketiah has had very little football over the last year so maybe he needs to earn a starting spot in the same way Kamada still has to.

Doesn't look bad and would definitely be a bit more solid. If Doucouré gets fit then he could go into the middle and Chalobah at RB. I'd definitely have Nketiah over Sarr though. He's not lit up the world yet but Sarr has done even less. He's a quick footballer with a slow footballing brain imo. Often too slow to react, poor ball retention and bad decision making. Not sure why we spent the money tbh. Could have kept Ayew and spent the money on a younger player with more potential. It's becoming glaring weakness in our summer investments. Defensively the replacements look decent but attacking wise we lost a huge contributor in Olise and have bought in Sarr, Kamada and Nketiah who have contributed very little and apart from Nketiah I fear none of them will get any better.

I can't think of a team that play 2 up top anymore.
When I started watching football all teams played that way.
It seems that tactics evolved and teams were worried about being outnumbered in midfield so sacrificed one of the strikers.
That's moved on to 'false 9s' and similar interpretations and two up top is seen as dinosaur football.
Even Dyche doesn't play it anymore.

Probably if Pep started to play it, others would follow!

Personally I think it still has a place with modern defenders and goalkeepers ill equipped to deal with it.
For our current team to employ it with JPM and Nketiah there may have to be a controversial decision to leave Eze out.
I know some think we could play Eze in a floating role behind them, but I can't see that working other than in theory.
To have the luxury of two up front you need a workmanlike midfield and proper width.

Southgate, is that you?

Sarr is direct and gets the ball in the box. He doesn't have the subtlety, skill or guile of Olise, but he has created more chances than anyone else in our squad this season (I think that's right?) He looked good coming off the bench but he didn't impress in his first start on Saturday. Will OG give him more chances like he did for Kamada, or will he just stick Nketiah back on the right. Neither has worked so far so we'll just have to see. In the case of Sarr it is hard not to think that Palace thought it was a risk worth taking given the modest fee. I do think he gives us something different, even if he just ends up being an impact sub.
