Lyon away - Europa league

To be replaced by who?
I think Eddie Howe could do a good job. Knows the Premiership inside out. We actually have decent players but Sage’s system is too gung ho and leaves us three against three or more exposed at the back too many times during a game. The great sides don’t let that happen more than once and then they probably clear it and get a clean sheet. I love attacking football but I have seen enough games ( all ) this season to know that we are in for a torrid time unless things change drastically. This is my opinion and not a fact. ))

Much better second half. But we need to stop leaking such poor goals. We also continue to needlessly leave ourselves ridiculously open at times.

Positives
Great goal from Pino.
Kamada and Khalili really improved us.
Sarr looked very rusty but at least he's getting closer to full fitness.
Thought Osorio looked quite bright in his cameo.

Negatives
General defensive organisation.
The number of time we make a poor pass and gift possession back in central areas is worrying.
Mingueza looked poor, slightly better second half but nothing more than a back up atm.
Disasi does not instill the confidence needed to be playing in that position.
JSL hold up play and lay offs are infuriatingly poor.

Quite a lot to correct in a short space of time before Brighton.

On a side note Lyon CB Kluivert who we've been linked with I thought looked much better than most of our CBs.

If we lost 3-2 and the ref was honest I would say we lost because of our defending . But lyon are poor we gave them goals , ok the 3rd chasing the game . But we did look better than them .
Decision change games and that ref made howlers . That will get into any players head . Can't believe only one person was booked or even sent off on the palace bench after the no pen . Its not soft he fouled Kamada all day long

Kevin Keegan was another one, he admitted he just wanted to out score the other team and the geordies loved him for it, fine if you win more than you lose, but if you keep getting beat it’s a different story I suppose
Like Ardiles at Tottenham and they got fed up was the that approach pretty quickly. It's difficult needing to score 4 in every game as he found out.

Eddie Howe’s teams are decent going forward but don’t know how to defend. Can’t see how he would improve things. Anyway he’s waiting for the England job. Sage is here for the duration and will come good once we sign an experienced capable centre back.

I wouldn’t mind Howe, but I’ve got to be honest I’m hoping if we can get a settled back three things will improve defensively because I’m quite enjoying the fact that we at least look like scoring goals, it’s still too early to be sacking sage for me
And by the way I’m glad you didn’t say Dyche, because we would definitely have fallen out 🤣

The right side of defence needs a lot of work. There is always a mile of space out there and we invariably let the ball bounce before even trying to defend it.

I would cut off my right arm rather than have Dyche at Palace. I love that we can play attacking football with verve. Like the second half on Sunday and this evening but we have to start defending like a Premiership mid table side not a non League or children’s side as another poster alluded. Frankly, it’s embarrassing.

Only saw the second half, but the refereeing was possibly the worst seen for sometime. If players go down without a head injury the game only stops, when the ball is out of play, he stopped it twice as they went down under no foul to waste time, then the Kamada penalty, which was a stonewall.
The joys of playing away in Europe.

Do we need to be more patient? Ok the defence atm is absolutely dodgy, but the equaliser against Forest and the first goal tonight showed excellent work on the training ground. Sage is doing something right. And he's succeeded before at Lyon and Lens. I would be unhappy if we sacked him before we'd given him a fair chance.

I understand this stance as it is infuriating however I hold hope that things might improve.

The defence actually looks as though it’s worse than if you didn’t coach the individual players and let them get on with organising themselves. It’s looked like that all season, a coaching problem.

We’re in probably the most competitive domestic league in the world and the second biggest European competition. Looking all over the place organisationally and tactically is something no collection of individual talents can overcome, and we have looked like that all season asides from the odd moment.

We lost some key players, brought in quite a few new faces, have a new manager and have a ridiculous schedule.

I think some expectation of a rocky start and hope for improvement is justified however the fear of languishing in and around the relegation zone, and out of all cup competitions, is looming.

Dear Mr Parish.

I know our business model is to buy cheap and if the player is successful sell him on. I get it I really do. But please could we advertise for a defence coach. I like sage but I feel the poor fella might need a hand with this side of things since you gave away our best defender about 2 minutes after one our greatest defenders ever left.

Thanks

It's the organisational aspect which is most concerning. Individual mistakes are one thing but we look all over the place. Particularly when the coaching staff have just had three weeks to come up with some plans.

We've got very average (at best) central defenders in our squad. In such circumstances what you don't need is an open, attack-focussed set up. Average defenders can have half a chance in a well drilled, organised defensive unit, but an open team is hard enough for very good defenders to play well in.

This isn't the right way to play for this moment in time.

Fair point Izardi. I don’t really expect us to win the Europa League although who knows… hope springs eternal.

Sage is doing something right but I fear that it’s at the expense of a solid defence. I remember seeing him gesticulating to the players to keep pressing forward and the goal Fulham scored in the friendly where the scorer had acres of time and space to finish. Unfortunately, that has been a blueprint for many games this season. I think we should give him a chance but we have a run of losable games coming up 4/5 in a row. Time will tell and as a Palace fan, I hope the chips fall our way but I prefer a less adventurous, more measured approach personally. Just my opinion. ))
