Lacroix

That’s a good comparison. His reputation at Chelsea was as an athletic, committed centre back who had occassional disastrous moments. I still think we needed a calm organiser in the window. Somebody like when Gary Cahill came to us. In fairness to the club I am not sure who that would have been though
I would have gone for Tosin from Chelsea but he’s now gone to spurs.

F*cking hell. How sh*t has he been at Chelsea. Unrecognisable from the Palace player.
Tel walked past him tonight.
Well done for the money Max , Chelsea will bomb him in the summer.

Guehi aswell...other than Olise, I cant think of too many weve sold in recent times who have gone on to do anything!

Completely agree. We needed one of (1) an experienced leader who could hit the ground running and marshall the defence - like a Gary Cahill or (2) an extremely good star signing like the French guy we targeted and could not get over the line - name escapes me.

(1) was not available. (2) we either could not do or chose not to do.

It seems like we took a view that Riad would come good, Canvot would be better for the experience last year, and Richards would step up. Then we threw a bit of mud at the wall to see what would stick to try and get through this season, and went for loans (Honest, Disasi). Tomiyasu must have done enough to convince in preseason.

So far none of these things seem to have played out as planned and we look bang in trouble at the back.

Eze as well
The grass may be worth more but not always greener !
Eze won the League and has scored key goals for Arsenal. He is now regularly starting games for them and playing Champions League football. He scored against Bayern in the week. He probably also doubled his wages at least.

I would say he is doing absolutely fine and the grass looks plenty greener

To be fair Eze is only starting because of injuries, but he's taken his chances.

Expect he'll be back on the bench when Tzolis is back though.

I’m sure Eze went to Arsenal knowing he wouldn’t be playing week in week out for them anyway. He probably expected sub appearances and the odd start here and there, they’ve got a quality squad. Being a bit part for Arsenal, (of which he is more than that anyway) earning more money and the chance of picking up the big prizes is obviously better than hanging around with us whatever any red n blue tinted spectacles palace fans might say

Now that all depends on whether you want to play regular football. Some do, some don’t, some are happy never to play like third string goalkeepers.

Agreed. This was part of my essay on another thread. Is the grass greener? Did they improve as players? Well they earn more and will more silverware, so yes. Will they benefit as individuals in their respective international careers? Currently not. So it depends upon the individual and what they want. Personally it would be latter but i never had to choose between being paid €100,000 and €200,000 per week. Also I suspect that despite claims to the contrary, playing for your country is not the pinnacle of a footballer's carerr.

He gets in the England squad when Wharton doesn't, he's also competing with players like Bellingham, who's probably the best midfielder in the world, so wouldn't start for England regardless who he's playing for, I'd say its very much benefitted his international career

Agreed, and in any event he's at his boyhood club - that probably counts for a lot for Eze.

Lacroix and Guehi have both struggled as there's a massive difference between playing as part of a back 3 for us and back 4 for a top club, Mitchell will also struggle if he goes to a top club as you're basically expected to do exactly what you do as a wing back as part of a back 4 at a top club.

I think it probably has more to do with whether you think being a valuable role player at one of the top teams in Europe gives you more chance of playing for England than playing every week for Palace. And History would suggest that is probably true.
