Graham Potter signed him for £2 Mill, accordingly Brighton have made a significant profit from his sale to Tottenham.

He started as a CB at Barcelona but was no more than OK in that role. He made his mark when he went to Celta Vigo and played at RWB, a position he had played a few times at Barca. In the Swindon game Sage had him playing in the Munoz role despite being light on experienced CDs. Mingueza is now primarily a RWB but can do a job in central defence (and has played LWB on a number of occasions - Mr Versatility).

Thanks for the info Doombear, definitely gives some context to the player for those of us who might not be familiar. I wasn't aware of the player before we went in for him. The first info that surrounded the move suggested he was coming as CB, but I no longer believe that to be the case, I don't think Sage ever saw him as being central primarily.

On his announcement on the club website, it was stressed that he can play across the backline in any position. Having seen his highlights for Vigo and then seen him in action for us in the Swindon game, I'm certain he will be used as a wing-back.

The fact that we are supposed to be finalising deals for two CBs currently, would also lend credit to that.

He was great as a big fish in a small pond (as we were then), I’m not sure that we would have been particularly good in our FA Cup team, having to share the limelight.

Not sure that we ever get the squad that ended up doing it, if he leaves earlier though. He was really essential to our game both in his final season before leaving, and for the big slug of establishing ourselves as a Premier League team after he came back.

Cup squad was better without him, but also would never have happened if he hadn't got us to that level where we could then surpass him.
 
Yeah I agree. But I still think that it wouldn’t have worked out at a big club for him at any stage in his career.

If the big clubs with oodles of money to spend didn't come in for any of our players we'd have other types of problems. i.e. wages, contracts expiring, signing any new players, having to sell at reduced prices to teams with less funds, Players not wanting to come here because there's no pathway for them to progress further in their own careers. All we can do is accept where we are in the order and use it to our best advantage. (This is where I am concerned, not with the selling but how we react to selling).

For me, the thing that's so frustrating about sales like this is that they are inevitable despite the fact that Palace can't get a lot bigger, better, or more successful.

Every club in the land has to accept that a bigger fish will regularly come along and take your best players. However, if you are a mid table league one club losing that player to a modest championship club, you can at least take comfort in the knowledge that if you run your club well then you might get to the championship. Perhaps that bigger fish you've just lost out to may pass you on the way down. The order of things can change, and that's part of why you must sell well and have a plan.

In our case, we've done all that but even at our best of times, the glass ceiling cannot be broken. Nobody above us will pass us on the way down. They are embedded. It doesn't matter how poorly a club like Chelsea runs itself or how well we run ourselves. That's the difference between us bemoaning the sale of our best players to Chelsea, City, Arsenal etc, and QPR, Millwall, or whoever, bemoaning the sale of their best players to us. They can legitimately aim to overtake us. We can't aim to overtake the big boys.

Modern football. It's f***ing s***.
