Lacroix

I'm ready to be shot down here... but am I the only person who isn't that unhappy with this? If we had to sell any high value player this summer - I'd have chosen Lacroix. He's a solid defender but I don’t think he's a world beater.

In terms of passing range and taking the ball forward I think Canvot has a far higher ceiling.
No, you're not the only one. I've said all along that if we need to sell one of our major assets (and that is what players are in this day and age - business assets, sadly) this window, it should be Lacroix because he's the easiest one to replace. Also, I don't rate him as being top drawer. He's better than Andersen whom he replaced but not at Guehi's level.

No, you’re not alone. Even though I consider him a top-class defender who’ll be hard to replace, I do believe we’ve had a knack for signing good centre-backs in the past. When Andersen left, Lacroix came in, and Riad and Canvot also seem to be promising. If only we could replace all our departures as successfully as we have with the centre-backs who’ve left us.

Agree. 34 mil profit for Max is good business. Great player and legend here now, but prone to the odd costly fcukup now and then. Chadi, Chris and Jaydee plus 1 other fine by me. Good luck to Max he'll need it there in the pit of hate

Including Lacroix is unfair as how can you expect him to have been replaced by someone who's immediately at his level?

As for the other 3:
  • Sarr has already in 2 years done more than Olise ever did (given Olise's njuries)
  • Pino is rapidly improving and he's not a World Cup Winner for nothing. I expect him to perform at a level that will match Eze
  • We already have Guehi replacements in the squad in both Riad and Canvot. They both need more time for somewhat different reasons to show their worth. The Guehi of 2021 (when he joined) was nothing like the one we sold last January.
Let's see how our replacements do in the coming season before moaning.

Bournemouth have lost 4 defenders plus Semenyo and Ouattara in the last 2 years and still come up smelling of roses because ultimately it's not about individual players but about how a team gels as we showed in both the cup final and the Community Shield.

Newcastle have been seeing their top players hoovered up in recent times; Anderson to balance the books. Isak, Tonali and Gordon come to mind.

It's not just 'poor old Palace'.
I normally like your posts but this is just nonsense. Olise is in the top 3 players in the world but Sarr did more? Jeez have you been on the sauce? I also don’t actually recall seeing Pino at all at the World Cup.

If you actually bothered to read my post I wasn’t referring to individual players but losing all of that combined top ability in a short space of time. The best teams do replace like for like when they do sell, whereas we don’t.

When Lacroix goes we are left with Riad Canvot and Richards, so let’s hope we either get at least two central defenders or we don’t play 3 at the back because a couple of injuries and we are in serious trouble.

Newcastle will spend, that is guaranteed and it won’t be Johnson and Strand Larsen and a couple of freebies that they get in.

I'm talking about what they've done for Palace - not how good they are.

Of course Olise is a world class player and better than Sarr but his contributions for us were limited by injuries. Even in his final season with us when he was at his best he only managed 19 games for us but provided 10 goals and 6 assists. It was the first season he had his scoring boots on with Glasner challenging him to score more goals (just 6 goals in the previous 2 seasons in 71 games with 19 assists).

Yes he was a great assist merchant and had he stayed he would have been even better for us but when it comes to his actual contributions for Palace over the 3 years with us, they were no more than Sarr has managed in his 2 years with us (Sarr = 33 goals and 10 assists in 92 games versus 16 goals and 25 assists for Olise in 90 games).

Agree - Olise is obviously a brilliant player but Sarr has been crucial to our recent trophy spree. Olise was nice to have but Sarr has been essential. He's scored big goals on the way to all of the significant things we've done over the last couple of seasons.

Based on Palace records alone - it's hard to call Sarr a downgrade. He's done the business for us.

Was saying this earlier.
Sarr is a massive downgrade , as a footballer , to Olise.
But what he’s done for us, numbers wise, it hasn’t been.
I actually think we would miss him more if he goes now, as we’d get no goals. Obviously the current Olise would tear it up and be unplayable for us now.

Lacroix has been as good, if not better than Anderson. Better defender, but Anderson’s distribution was on another level.

If you look at Pino/johnson as Eze replacement (not like for like, but players behind/beside the number 9) and , let’s be honest Larson was bought as JPMs replacement.
They are miles off it.

Am I alone in thinking there is a degree of complacency about Lacroix's impending departure?
Or perhaps it's a resignation that there's little we can do about it.

I think his departure, following on from Guehi's , deprives us of two of a back 3 which was formidable for much of their time together.
There was an understanding of each other's role along with Richards and Mitchell honed and drilled on the training field over more than a year.
Riad and Canvot are still rookies at Premier League level with I think less than 30 games between them at the level.
Even if we bring in a couple of central defenders, they may well be new to English football and require time to build up an understanding with new teammates and a new manager.

I recognise I'm highlighting problems, not solutions, but look at our early games.
Everton's giants will be relishing the set pieces and Haaland will be licking his lips in anticipation.

Richards is the Anchor now of which Ty,JD & Daniel will look up to. Palace has always had a strong defence & this coming season stepping up for all is a big must

Have faith in Riad, when fit he is a quality centre back and Canvot is impressive and only going to get better. If we keep Richards and Mitchell, we still have a quality backline.

We will see Drakes-Thomas this season and while he's only 17 and it will take time.....he has the potential to be an England player like Eze.

The most annoying part of this is our success has benefited the players more it seems than the club.

It’s a horrible thought but you get the feeling that most players just look at us as a short term location to show their talent then reap the benefits of an onward move.

Name another top tier club that has lost the combined ability of Olise, Eze, Guehi and Lacroix in such a short period of time without properly replacing them? I can’t think of one.
Well, Wolves sold Kilman, Neto, Cunha, ait-Nouri and Silva in 13 months for well over 200 million - way more than the four Palace players. They certainly did not replace them with players of the same quality.
You can get 7/1 on us going down

We're always listed as in the relegation mix at the start of each year. Yet here we are in the Premier League for the 14th consecutive season, with 3 trophies and 2 FA cup finals along the way. Much better than most clubs out there.

At least we've actually achieved some exciting things since administration. Most clubs outside the "big 6" endure a constant cycle of doing nothing of note.

We are in big trouble if this is the case Lacroix is our leader losing him is a massive loss Riad, canvot,Richards are no where near as good

He's a loss but was always going to go.....We will make tens of millions of profit.

I disagree that our defence without him is an issue.....Riad is underated.....he was immense in the European final and played well at the world cup.
