and the other half goes to the Younger Longterm Unemployed. But maybe don't look at that....... cos they will kick up Stink if you try.

Completely untrue, in so many ways.

The 'other half' doesn't just go to the unemployed. A huge amount of it goes to people who are employed.

There's also enormous irony in saying young people 'will kick up a stink' if economic measures are taken against them... have you met any pensioners!?

Young people have already absorbed a completely disproportionate amount of the economic and policy pressure of the last couple of decades.

Pensioners are without question the most politically and economically protected demographic in the country, and successive governments have been incredibly reluctant to make them share the sort of reductions in benefits or living standards that working age people have already experienced.

But many pensioners have already experienced poor living standards all their lives. And many continue to do so.

The UK state pension is not overly generous but most people also have other pensions to supplement this.

I think there are c13m people of pension age of which about 10% are deemed to be in poverty but about the same amount are higher rate tax payers, so have incomes of over £50k p.a.
Therefore, putting all pensioners into a single bucket, as most people do, is far too simplistic.

Over half of the welfare budget goes on pensions so it clearly needs to be looked at.
How much do we spend on welfare for immigrants?

This is the same kind of thinking that produced a higher inheritance tax on farmers.

It's politically motivated and doesn't touch the cost of developing a care system.

Complete b*llocks, and you know it.

Brexit has reduced UK GDP per capita by 6% to 8% over the decade following the 2016 referendum, according to comprehensive economic studies (such as research published by the National Bureau of Economic Research

The sky hasn't fallen, despite people like you panicking Chicken Little.

Anyone in need of actual support should of course have access to it, but in general terms, this generation of pensioners are, by many measures, the most economically fortunate generation in recent history.

Then retirement should be something to look forward to which seems a better situation than in America, as an example, where many old people have no option but to keep on working.

So Burnham wants to rejoin the EU. Does make you laugh when in the same breath he says he is reducing VAT on fuel and wants to nationalise the water industry. If we were in the EU he would be unable to do either.

So we'd left the EU before vat was put on fuel? And nationalisation of utilities is banned?

FFS basics fella

It needs means testing, but only up to the higher income bracket. Or at least income minus rent means test

Its a vote winner
He hopes so. That's the only reason he is floating such a dumb idea.

Image trying to re enter the EU.

Goodbye Pound. Goodbye bargaining power. Goodbye controlling our borders. Hello the US of E.

Brenter.

Full on, can't wait. Looking forward to the right wing running Europe too

we'll rejoin just as germany, spain, italy, netherlands etc all vote to leave the sinking ship!!

we will be the eu!!
Yes, it's just the kind of thing that would happen. Just can't get anything right it seems.
However, I'm not sure the EU will allow failure. Too much of an obvious gravy train for the least talented politicians. Get voted out of your constituency - stand for Europe. Time over as minister - top European job awaits.

You're including Farage in that I assume, with his 70k pa EU pension

We will have to disagree on this one.

We don't need Brussels for a right wing alliance.
