Johnson, McNeil

Just awful business, if true. Swap plus £15m to Palace would be more like it.

I wonder whether the Chairman is losing it. I assume that he bought Strand Larsen and Johnson as insurance policy against relegation. They'd have done well in the Championship...

And all because the Chairman was held to ransom by the Manager. To what effect?

Johnson clearly did not work out - better to cut our losses and free up his high salary.

I still consider Marco Gabbiadini to be our worst buy. The transfer fee might look low in today’s terms, but it was a record fee for Palace at the time. I think it was the comparison again Ian Wright, who he was brought in the replace, that was most stark. We cut our losses - lost nearly half the money in 4 months (equivalent to Johnson). However, subsequent replacements (albeit less expensive) were similarly uninspiring.

Who was our last record signing to prove his worth? Was Guehi our record signing at the time?
It's probably worth noting Johnson's fee probably included add-ons, performance clauses (that I doubt he hit) and his wages, so maybe not as big a dent and loss than we may think

There is no swap deals media likes to keep coming out with nonsense like that
You have said this before, but they do happen. I will use the same examples I quoted you in the Hayden Hackney thread;

Clinton Morrison and Andy Johnson, Alexis Sanchez and Henryk Mikhitariyan, Danilo da Silva and Joao Cancelo, Arthur Melo and Miralem Pjanic.

When the original story broke a week ago it was being touted as McNeil + cash, but in the last two or three days it has all been about a straight swap deal with no cash involved.

The latest story is likely to be accurate, it is coming from better sources and more frequent, and supposedly both players are having medicals on the same day (today) which further leans into the swap deal theory.

My real point is that reading a selling club’s fans forums gives you an idea on how a player is performing and whether he’s any good. Maybe if we’d have looked at what the Spurs fans thought of Johnson we wouldn’t be in this mess. And as I’ve pointed out the Everton fans can’t stand McNeil. I really hope he comes good but have serious doubts.
As has been proved, it was only ONE small forum you looked at & about 8 people expressed that, all the other forums liked McNeil & wish him well. Even the HYS on this has Everton fans wishing him well as well as a couple are pleased he's going. Have a great day.

Absolute nonsense. Grand Old Team is by far their biggest forum and the vast majority want rid of him.

I think the poster is referring to players, who when they were bought, were our most expensive purchase, so since Benteke was the most expensive prior to us buying Johnson and then Strand Larsen, the others on your list wouldn't count if that was the poster's point. I suppose we need to know who was the most expensive player prior to Benteke. Going back decades, I can remember Clive Allen being the most expensive when we signed him. Since then my memory's blurred on the question.
Prior to Benteke the holder was Cabaye, bought the previous season for £12 million.

Yohan was worth every penny and then some.
