Israel v Hamas

Jeremy Bowen (BBC) on the difficulties reporting facts from Gaza

"Even wars have rules. They don't stop soldiers killing each other but they're intended to make sure that civilians caught up in the fighting are treated humanely and protected from as much danger as possible. The rules apply equally to all sides.

If one side has suffered a brutal surprise attack that killed hundreds of civilians, as Israel did on 7 October 2023, it does not get an exemption from the law. The protection of civilians is a legal requirement in a battle plan.

That, at least, is the theory behind the Geneva Conventions. The latest version, the fourth, was formulated and adopted after World War Two to stop such slaughter and cruelty to civilians from ever happening again.

The reminder is timely because the rules are being broken.

An estimated 14,500 Palestinian children in Gaza had been killed by January this year, according to Unicef
Getting information from Gaza is difficult. It is a lethal warzone. At least 181 journalists and media workers have been killed since the war started, almost all Palestinians in Gaza, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. Israel won't let international news teams into Gaza.

Since the best way to check controversial and difficult stories is first hand, that means the fog of war, always hard to penetrate, is as thick as I have ever experienced in a lifetime of war reporting.

It is clear that Israel wants it to be that way. A few days into the war I was part of a convoy of journalists escorted by the army into the border communities that Hamas had attacked, while rescue workers were recovering the bodies of Israelis from smoking ruins of their homes, and Israeli paratroopers were still clearing buildings with bursts of gunfire.

Israel wanted us to see what Hamas had done. The conclusion has to be that it does not want foreign reporters to see what it is doing in Gaza." (BBC Website)

Hope these boats not hit by missiles from Islamic Jihad or other terrorists in Gaza which were supposed to hit Israel but landed in the wrong place.

Am surprised the flotilla not surrounded by a golden halo there is so much virtue on board.

Typically classy post.

If anyone is keeping up with what is apparently the worst thing happening in Gaza right now, it’s *checks notes* Greta Thunberg.

The Israelis just waiting on the UN to move a couple of million that no one wants.

Usual finger pointing exercise.

The US will take the blame for its 'greatest donor'.....Sorry ally. I must admit watching people starve to death enemy or not is a bad look.

The sad fact is that Palestine was run far better when the British controlled it. Shame the Israelis killed us to boot us out.

Probably needs to be done also to a few Hamas supporters here.
You'd have to be especially thick to think criticism of Israel's genocide is based on not knowing what happened on October 7th - clearly the IDF and others are exactly that.

You would also have to be especially thick to think that Israel is commiting Genocide when its aims are targeted at neutralising Hamas while taking measures to minimize civilian casualties in a complex conflict.

I guess my point is prove. You should have to watch the same videos as great.

This woman....and I say woman because she's no longer a kid. What is she on? Looks like the whole climate change complaints were just a fad, a vehicle for her and this is the latest high profile protest she can get involved with. It indicates to me that actually she's just an anarchist and doesn't actually give much of a s*** about it all, and no doubts will be onto a new campaign once this is over.

Wearing all these scarves and waving their 'made in 1967 flag' as if she is at one with them.

f*** off Greta

Yeah great idea. I would use her mainsail as a projector screen and play the 47 minutes over and over.

You'd have to be incredibly thick to still be parroting IDF tropes - there's a few on here who are like the Japanese solider after WW2; still fighting a battle that everyone else has moved on from. Give it up, nobody believes the bullshit anymore.

You have supported and tied yourself in knots attempting to excuse the murder of tens of thousands of children and civilians. Maybe one day you will reflect on that.

It's telling that you dismiss Israels right to defend itself against Hamas a group openly dedicated to its destruction as "IDF tropes"

The real knots tying is ignoring the thousands of rockets fired at Israeli civilians in the October 7th massacre and Hamas use of human shields while crying foul when Israel responds.

Maybe one day, but clearly not yet.
