"On the morning of July 24, more than 20 Israeli settlers from the illegal Havat Gilad settlement attacked Palestinians’ homes on the eastern edge of Tal, southwest of Nablus in the occupied West Bank.
Residents initially drove them back, but the settlers returned shortly afterwards, with Israeli soldiers. Videos appear to show a Palestinian man seizing a settler’s rifle and shooting him dead before soldiers shoot the man dead, with further video revealing Israelis continuing to open fire."
 
murderous. Genocidal. and the West is complicit in supplying arms , and also blanking media coverage of the slaughter of innocents.

IDF turning up with the settlers reminiscent of Northern Ireland c 1969 when off duty police officers were filmed dropping rocks on the Peace Marches.

Both are supposed to be protectors of victims and upholders of public order.

Indeed, the media distortion by the UK Government was immense during 'the troubles'. It became massively apparent how HMG influenced the media after the Falklands, which was a lot closer to disaster for the UK than most people think.

Don't mention those islands.

On the one hand, we have a populist idiot in power in Argentina stirring things up.

Against, we have a proper military base now with an airstrip; the islands are protected by a lot more personnel than we had in 1982; we have 4 (admittedly older class) typhoons to take care of a lot; and a river patrol boat that can punch above its weight (but hardly scares the Argentine navy). I understand a destroyer has also turned up which is a relief.

However, we have next to no surface fleet to deploy as we had the last time round. We have 2 powerful aircraft carriers which would not make the journey and lack supply and protection critical to be of any use. We have half a dozen genuinely scary killer subs where one would cause the entire Argentine surface fleet to stay in dock... if only one was currently sea worthy and fit for combat.

In about 2 years we should have around 7 astute class subs and will have resolved the issues with the carriers. If Argentina are going to have another go, especially with Trump ambivalent about supporting us, now would be the moment.

"Risible" is a bit harsh, as I am simply aping what has been discussed openly in the House and in respected periodicals.

BTW, if we cannot muster one destroyer to protect our bases in Cyprus, how can we expect to send a recovery fleet to the South Atlantic?

PS I hope you're right. The ingredients present from the last time are present today. Nationalist populist government; Argentina in an appalling state; popular deflection critical to divert attention and boost incumbent regime; 1982 sufficiently historic.
