Impressed with new signings?

Riad - inaccurate passing
Kamada - not setting the world alight but think there’s more to come
Sarr - not see much but gave the ball away too easily

None of these have been an upgrade on Olise, Anderson or Ayew but it is early days.

We definitely mustn’t lose any other players.

I think it’s fair to say the jury is still out on all three of them, especially when you think of the immediate impact Munoz and Wharton had last season. Also how sharp AWB looked when he came on for the spammers yesterday.
Riad looked decidedly shaky and a bit to casual for me at times yesterday
But early days, we know it’s a tough fast paced division to get used to

I note that even Bournemouth have spent in excess of £100 million this summer.
Some of this is accounted for by the sale of Solanke.
Even Ipswich has spent in the region of £100 million (source: transfer market.co).

We've taken around £90 million with the sales of Olise, Anderson, Ayew, Banks and monies from Phillips, O'Brien and JRS.
We've so far added Riad, Sarr and Kamada but without huge expenditure.

It will be interesting to see how much we eventually spend this window and whether there will be more outgoings.

Heavy expenditure does not guarantee successful signings of course, but it certainly gives you a wider choice in the market as it means you can look beyond loans, free transfers or players running down their contracts.

West Ham looked very comfortable at the back Mateta never got a look in and Edouard couldnt hit a barn door.
We caused them a few problems first half, but mateta does look a pale shadow of the player who was on fire for a few months earlier in the year

But Riad and Kamada are upgrades on Tomkins and Riedewald (who they were replacing).

We have not bought anyone to replace Ayew and Anderson.

Don’t forget the £100m plus we got for finishing 10th…

Minutes played by our three new signings...

Kamada - 97
Riad - 90
Sarr - 25

I seem to remember Mateta struggled for a couple of seasons before suddenly becoming the reincartion of Marco Van Basten. Chelsea cut their losses on Mo Salah and Kevin de Bruyne who eventually turned out alright.

Shall we give the new guys a bit more time before writing them off?

Kamada was replacing Olise.
Riad is a defender Riedewald was a midfielder.
Sarr has replaced Ayew.
Tomkins definitely a defender. Centre back if memory serves.

Kamada for Riedewald. Lord help us if he was intended to replace Olise. Like ordering champagne in your sainsburys delivery and having it replaced with a tin of Harp.

There should be a clear distinction between initial impressions, performances in 180 or less minutes, and a terminal judgement of a player/transfer. Equally, I’d say one purple patch doesn’t turn JPM into MvB! 🤓

It will be a while before anyone can confidently assert their opinions on the effectiveness of the transfers.

Looking at other posts btw, I thought that in terms of ‘squad replacement’ it was generally accepted that:

Olise: Kamada/Sarr
Riedewald:
Tomkins: Riad
JRS:
Andersen:
Ayew:

So even counting Kamara and Sarr separately, we’ve had more outgoings thus far. I’m less optimistic than others of some sort of mass spending spree this week. I think we’ll be grateful to get two in and they may not be the heroes we’re dreaming of! 🤔

So now the dust has settled it’s clear that the squad has been upgraded both individually and in terms of options and depth.

Riedewald: Kamada
Tomkins: Riad
Anderson: Lacroix
Ayew: Sarr
Edouard: Nketiah
plus an additional defender in Chabolah

The only player not replaced was Olise but he is irreplaceable - when fit! He was injured for much of last season.

A useful chart. The loss of Olise would be difficult to cover, but my concern is the lack of wide players. I guess it's not the managers style, but as we know they come and go frequently, so the club needs some eye on the future beyond Glasner.
Only Sarr regularly plays wide. Poor old Munoz.
