You need to look at our own country, not others.
We have absorbed many waves of immigrants over the centuries but remained British. Our culture has widened and deepened as a result but the essence remains the same.
However, it’s not just here that change happens. We are part of a world in which international travel is now normal, quick and easy. One that still has enormous economic disparities which incentivise the poor to travel to seek better lives. One in which falling birth rates in wealthy countries provide the opportunities for those better lives.
That the flow of people needs to be properly managed is certainly true, but has proved very difficult. So too though is that we have a need which won’t be met in any other way. It can be mitigated by better training and tougher restrictions on the work shy but not eliminated.
There’s nothing to fear though, provided we adopt zero tolerance policies on how new arrivals are expected to behave. All need to have that made crystal clear.
