Yes. Oil crisis and foreign competition. But aside that it's broadly true.

I find it hilarious how these old goats who bang on about the 70s know so little about it. But seeing as they also seem to know so little about the EU too it's unsurprising.

We were part of the Common Market/EEC/EC/EU for 43 years - for how many of them was this economic miracle taking place?

So you deny our economic rise even occurred, let alone a link with the evolution and growth of the EU. The fact that we were f***ed, then became the second largest economy in Europe, overtaking many nations, but we've dropped off since leaving, doesn't dissuade you lol

Also, a bit weird, is how you are right wingers economically, yet you're complaining that the right wing you spent decades putting in power has kept you poor, apparently, so you plan on voting even more right wing than before, "because Labour". 🤣

So how for how many of those 43 years was Britain prosperous?
For someone so convinced of his own omniscience you're quite wide of the mark. I've never voted Conservative in my life. Lol at that.

Yes. Oil crisis, decimalisation inflation and foreign competition. But aside that it's broadly true, certainly for a paragraph long enough to rub in the noses of the clueless.

It's clear what is hilarious on this thread. The 70s were pretty awful to live through - not helped by Glam Rock.

After WW2 the UK sat on it's backside by that I mean workers unions and management. We all congratulated ourselves that we won the war and all was well.

Meanwhile Germany and Japan amongst others rebuilt their economy and came to a consensus about new working practices and technology.

By the 1960's it was clear that productivity in the UK was declining or rather other countries were forging ahead. Wilson recognised that in his often quoted white heat of technology speech. Unfortunately recognising that change is inevitable and doing something about it are not the same.

In 1969 Wilson and Barbara Castle tried to reform the Labour laws but bottled it when their union bosses objected to even the most mildest of reforms.

So by the seventies with major economic reform nowhere in sight we had become the sick man of Europe. We had a decade of major strikes and the Labour government had to go begging to the IMF for a loan which resulted in them making cutbacks to the NHS amongst others things.

As a result we got Thatcher who took an axe to the decaying unproductive parts of the economy.

All of this could have ben avoided if the post war governments had implemented gradual reform. If you don't tend to your garden regularly it becomes overgrown and then it's slash and burn.

Yes, Thatcher inherited an appalling mess and did something about it

Lots of countries that have avoided full EU membership have done ok.

Iceland, Switzerland, Norway, .....all ok. And as for demographic-replacement ? ( & any concomitant unaffordable housing ?) the East was late to the EU show and the progress there seems to be way behind the West ? or is it all just theoretical and only a Trump conspiracy theory ?

By chucking 2 million onto the dole, cutting taxes for the richest in society and selling off the housing stock and other family silver to pay for it.

If you didn't make a big buck then you're definitely one of the plebs

The country was in danger of complete collapse when she took over. The Callaghan government was incredibly bad.
