I can see a poor start again this season and a struggle to match last season's achievements

I hope not, key player.
I hope not too, but it’s not outrageous to think Liverpool could have an interest.

They have lost Jota, appear to be offloading Nunez and the stories about Dias going to Spain continue.
Liverpool will be in the market for a striker and in my view Mateta would tick all the boxes.
He would give them a real presence down the middle ( which they have lacked), is excellent on the counterattack, and has a very good conversion rate for chances he’s presented with.
With the service provided at Liverpool he would very likely top 20 goals a season.

As to the fee, that’s another matter, and it may be that what kills a potential deal.
Hopefully JPM will not become unsettled if Liverpool have a genuine interest.

I have entertained the possibility that we reached our 'High-Water Mark' last season with the forthcoming campaign proving challenging and a case of 'After the Lord Mayor's show'. We could be subjected to a cresta run of football descents.

Europe on the horizon, where exactly are the quality signings to strengthen the squad??
Very bad timing to have lost Freedman at such a pivotal time.
All we read about are potential departures:

We should be able to hold our own in that Mickey Mouse conference league (whatever it's called) with whatever we're left with. There's only a couple of decent sides in it. West Ham are pony and they won it.

At least we have,nt got the problem of international players coming back late, sometimes injured. This alone gives OG a much better start. As far as a league campaign is concerned ,the way we finished last season even with all of our second string players involved at times, says we will be OK as long as we don’t lose to many. If we do lose anyone we will need to buy in ,but it won’t change how OG prepares. For Europe, the chances are some of the young players could play a part as back up ,probably all are being closely looked at before anymore incomings happen.

Given Mateta is training in London and not allowed to talk to other clubs this story seems unlikely. Possible his agent is drumming to force palace hand in contract negotiations
I thought this also. Surely clubs aren’t allowed to approach players under contract. The Munoz story is lost in translation, he’s always said it’s his dream to play for Barca and spurs ain’t paying 100m for Wharton. It’s a good thing to have players linked to other clubs, shows we are doing well.
Also so far we may not have spent much but have added 2 players we need and depth. I thought the new lwb looked decent v milwall.

I agree, We must use our excellent young players alongside our, even better 1st team players in the pre-season games to try and bring them up to speed. Those that cope will be ready for 10-12 minutes in games where we are 3-0 up in the prem. There is no point in having a top quality academy if we are never going to give them a chance, and let them go for nothing. Which is what we seem to do.

Blimey here we go again, middle of July and the doom and gloom has already started🤣
And despite my nom-de-plume, I'm NOT one of the culprits.

Is Eze 'odds-on' to go as one poster has said? Only if a club comes up with the release fee. As for Guehi, again, a club that he wants to go to needs to make an acceptable offer and no-one has yet. I don't see Parish & Co panicking if we face losing Guehi for nothing next summer.

Furthermore:
  • We've brought in the cover we needed for keeper and LB/LWB at minimal cost
  • there hasn't been a big exodus of 1st team squad players (unlike last summer)
  • we basically have the 1st team squad that won us the FA Cup and had a very good second half of the season. They know what Glasner wants from them etc.
Things, of course, may change , and possibly for the worse but no need to panic yet IMO.

What games will we be 3 nil up ? I like your optimism.

Omens are not good - second lowest investment so far in new signings, at least two of our key stars odds on to leave (Eze and Guéhi), no equivalent replacements will be interested, due to the uncertainty of European football, and if the appeal is successful, it will be too late.

What is the best and worst outcome? Fortunately, we have a quality manager who can make the best of it but his patience may be tested quid pro quo.
We already knew Guehi and Eze were possibly going and have done for a year now. As it stands it looks like one of them might actually be staying.
In terms of investment in players the window still has 40 odd days to go. Glasner wants business done early but selling clubs wont let players go until they have their own replacements lined up. it takes time. We might bring in another 2 or 3 in the next two weeks. Highly likely and if it happens no one will be complaining.
Incoming players have no uncertainty over European football. We have European football (with a decent chance of getting upgraded to a better competition). We are FA cup holders and about to enter Europe.
Oliver Glasner has not (yet) extended his contract. Equally he is still tied to Palace for another year. The club have made it pretty clear he will not be allowed to leave before the end of his contract.
Mateta is in talks to sign a new contract, Munoz has already extended. Wharton is under contract for another three and a half years.
There's no international tournament to burn our key players out this summer. They've all begun a good preseason which Glasner didn't get with them last year.

Personally, I've heard some pessimism in my time but this just feels like doom for the sake of doom. No basis for what you're saying at all. Its rubbish really. I'm personally betting we have a decent start and push on up the table.

It's not Glasner's style.
It makes me look like I've not supported the club very long to set expectations like this but in my defence, Palace have always been a random and chaotic adventure so there's as much chance we'll have a great start (only to then blow it) as we are to start badly (and blow it even more).

Probably.

There is indeed always a good run and a bad run. We're consistent like that. There's always a worst in the league form and always a best in the league form, part of the season.

We'll occupy top spot at some point next season mark my words. But we'll finish 12th.
