I moved to the Midlands in the 80s and I used to watch Kidderminster Harriers - if we weren't away in the Midlands. There was a guy who used to shout "bloody rubbish Harriers, bloody rubbish" every game. We won the league, the FA trophy and got to the fifth round of the FA cup - losing one nil in a replay to West Ham. I figured that guy was just getting every day life off of his chest. I found him comical. He'll be dead now. Singing "Bloody rubbish angels, bloody rubbish" In heaven. Or telling Satan he's bloody rubbish and getting kicked out of hell.

Late 80s there was an old boy in the Arthur Wait in a trilby and raincoat, whatever the weather, who would shout ‘No more head tennis’ and ‘Need a goal Palace’. Hence his nickname ‘Needagoal’. This was acceptable in a tight game but not when we were 8-0 up in a League Cup tie😀. Can’t remember who we were playing but think Wright and Bright scored a hatful. Poor old boy had the piss ripped out of him!

The Arthur is where the proper fans go. We don't need rubbish like good facilities or a decent view. The Holmesdale is far too new and posh. The old Holmesdale was the best stand ever. Our Kop - only better.

Arthur Enclosure was mental.Pub groups used to come in as individual mobs. Alliance, Port Manor and Clifton all singing the name of their pub. Then everyone would shut up just before kick off when the top firm turned up. ‘We’re the Wilton (Arms), we’re the Wilton, we’re the Wilton over ‘ere’. Nobody messed with them….

The noise level was decent to start with, but it got to be a point where fans in the Arthur and blocks A-B would be singing and the ex HF were still singing their own songs so it all petered out.
The atmosphere was at top level again when Pino scored, but the wind got knocked out straight away as City scored their third very quickly after that.
This would have happened even if the HF were there, but the main difference being is that we didn’t have the drum and HF singing to themselves. Even when the HF were singing all game, it didn’t mean the atmosphere was good. It was just 50-100 odd blokes singing and banging a drum. That is not an atmosphere!! It takes the whole crowd to create an atmosphere.

Last nights game was just the start of the season, and a 1-4 loss will kill any atmosphere. But like the team we now need to find our voices, and maybe we need to listen to what is going on in the stadium and then ALL join in on that to create the noise.

I was there!
It was the new season after our first FA Cup final appearance and Johnny Byrne was visiting from South Africa. At half-time he walked onto the pitch and received a standing ovation. Hattricks from both Wright & Bright made it a very special night.
Back on topic, the atmosphere at Selhurst since 2005 particularly for evening k.o's has been the envy of clubs throughout the nation. The press regularly mention it. The HF had our backs. There were times when it was really quiet last night and it felt a lot less fun. The gulf in class between the two teams didn't help.

I remember seeing the giant shrimp guy when we beat Southend 6-1 a week after winning at Reading by the same scoreline a few years after the 8-0

The old enclosure in the AW Stand remains my favourite place to watch a game. Great view, and we had Joyce the Voice. I have watched games from every oriface of our stadium since.
