Has anyone ever won anything ?

Last game of the season in ‘91. We were playing Manure at home. Before the game in the Clifton my mate Steve said his father-in-law knew a trainer who fancied a horse that day. Half the pub piled in and the old guvnor, Dave Harper, took the money to a local bookies.
Anyway, when we got back from the match there was hundreds of pound on the bar to divvy up. It was a great night after. Not only had the horse won but so had Palace 3-0 and it was my birthday!
Those days are few and far between, savour them.

I went to the oaks, I had already won three races when the main event was next. I had already placed my main bet when a last minute tip meant I put £5 on a 28/1 outsider. It won by a nose.

I don't remember much about the rest of the day, Champagne was involved. I woke up next morning bad hangover and more money in my pocket that yesterday. I think you can call that a good day.

Didn’t we sign Brighty with lifeline money?
Anton Outlakowski (definitely spelt wrong) was the first one but he was crocked for good soon after signing.
I remember the Lifeline Draw was a big event back in the day with a £100k first prize. One year it was held at the Crystal Palace Sport Centre and the star guest was Sir Stanley Matthews. Everyone present was in awe! I didn’t win though 😒

Maybe I’m just lucky but here’s another one!
When working as a young shipbroker in Athens I played for the Spartans who were the self styled national team of Greece (which meant the ONLY team in Greece )! In their raffle I won a weekend cruise for 2 in the Aegean and being single took my mate Jeff. There was a big storm but we managed to pull two Dutch girls onboard. The sea was so rough we could hardly stand up in the disco with the dancefloor pitching 30 degrees and everyone pissed. Then with the girls we all kept falling out of bed! Great days…..

There was a time when I used to enter quite a few competitions and actually won prizes on a few occasions. The ones that stand were £50 from the People newspaper for being the first out the hat in their cryptic crossword competition, and a pair of running trainers - I can't remember the make but they weren't very good.

More recently I won £2,000 in a local charity lottery.

And, just alongside me on my office desk is my plaque for coming 2nd in the 1999 Brighton 10K Fun Run! My then two young children were most impressed to hear their father's achievement announced over the tannoy system ( as indeed was I )
