Happy Birthday Bob

Bob Dylan's 85 today.

I know he's not everyone's favourite, especially amongst younger folk, and, frankly, when I see videos of him still performing on stage, I can understand why. There's something tragic about him still mangling the melodies and rhythms of the songs he wrote so brilliantly around 60 years ago.

But for me he was a shining light of originality among the formulaic pop music in the 60s. His ability to craft words and tell stories was second to none back then. He was my hero. His creativity at that time was at its best and the story was well covered in the recent film No Direction Home. I was fortunate to see him perform at the Albert Hall in 1966 when he first went electric and the memory of that night is still vivid today.

An incredibly talented man whose songs will live on well after he's no longer around. So, to the enigma that is Bob Dylan, I send birthday greetings and I'll be playing my favourite album Blood On The Tracks in celebration today.

Absolutely agree and Blood on the Tracks is my favourite too - especially Shelter from the Storm which got a reworking on the live record Hard Rain and still worked, for me anyway.
He's one of those who's lived through his fame and come out on the other side but is still someone who made a difference.

I saw him in 1990. It seems like he's been 85 his whole life.
He certainly sounded like it. 🙂

Bit rotten to Joan though.

Any jokes about being ready for his Zimmer man

I arranged for Shelter From The Storm to be played at my brother's funeral. Appropriate, I thought.
