Got free tickets for the Guilfest over the weekend - B&B in Godalming - nice! But Guilford? Don't get me wrong, I am not a snob, and actually like some supposed sh*t holes like the Medway towns, Gravesend, even Dover, I like them if they've got some character, soul, nice quaint old buildings and some old-fashioned independent traders, but Guilford? Like a spaceship made of lego that has fallen on our planet, another horror show from our town planners, I think I hate it almost as much as Maidstone. I am starting to believe Invasion of the Body Snatchers was not a work of fiction. Any comments might involve which other rent-a-kit nightmare towns there are, or you may take offence and really like Guilford, in which case I hope never meet you in person. The Guilfest was good btw, Stereo MCs, the Skids and a few others inc the Bay City Rollers!

Godalming is very nice the Star pub is renowned does loads of cider and has a decent garden. It still retains individual shops as well as the ubiquitous multi nationals. The 'spoons is a cut above and resembles an ocean liner.

My daughter works in Guildford and lived there until last year. The High Street is very pleasantly quaint and doesn’t have an abundance of empty shops. Surprised you feel Dover and Maidstone are nicer. In my experience Dover is a complete shitholeHowever I don’t think that Guildford justifies the ridiculously high property prices

it's the main bit round the spoons and the mall that I found particularly depressing, I was on a bus on the high road but couldn't venture to the pedestrianised bit, didn't say I preferred Maidstone, devil or the deep blue sea, lots of mock Tudor, looked like a slightly grander version of Cheam

Yes I agree, and that roundabout is a nightmare traffic wise.

Actually I'm post judging since I remember them the first time around. Not live admittedly.
then like me first it was the Osmonds when I was about seven years old, I was nine or ten during Rollermania, and even as a wee boy I remember that shuddering realisation - "what is wrong with the world, and what is wrong with women?". We're both still scratching our heads no doubt.

I think I even bought myself a tartan scarf on the off chance, no such luck 😩

Back on topic, Guildford used to be a lovely town. 55 years ago my wife and I bought her engagement ring in a lovely old jewellers in the High Street. Over the years it has declined under a wave of appalling planning decisions. We've given up visiting now that Debenhams, House of Fraser and some other notable shops have closed down.

The only reason to go now is to flip through the fabulous stock in Ben's Records. Must be one of the finest record shops in the country.

Ben's Records is a great place. He cut his teeth working at another 2nd hand record store at the bottom of the town back in the early / mid 1980's. I wandered into Ben's a few years back and we recognised each other after at least 25 years since I last saw him. Selling records must be good for your health as he didn't look too different from 1983 !

Our monarch Charlie boy had a real point about the undead town planning that has ruined some sweet old places - Reading has about seven giant multi storey car parks and a shopping centre, The Oracle, which is about as inviting as the Death Star. You can see the old London Road has a touch of the John Betjeman's about it, that old Victorian craftsmanship ethic disappeared about 100 years ago and was replaced by this mechanical utilitarianism which kills places.
