Guehi to Liverpool Jan?

I've seen reports (twice now) that friends/people close to Guehi have ruled out any chance of Marc now leaving in January claiming should even an offer come in that Palace want to accept in January he is now apparently decided on rejecting any move until the summer when he be able to do what he wanted to do all along. Choose his own club and destiny.

He may still go to Liverpool. If he does it will be because thats where he has chosen to go and it will be as a free agent in the summer. Good luck to him I say. I know the club would have wanted a fee for him but we paid £18m and got World class performances from him for 5 years. He owes us nothing.

And made Chelsea look like mugs for selling him: A. At all and B. Cheaply.
And now they won't get any sell on bunce either.

Ultimately any player who runs down his contract does so to maximise his next contract - wages and signing on fee.
There is of course a risk as he could lose form or get injured in the months prior to his current contract ending.

This strategy would have been discussed and agreed with his agent, probably a few years ago.

When Olise signed a new contract with a higher release clause this was clearly the Palace approach to at least get decent money when a player left. Eze's contract followed similar lines a few months later. Guehi could easily have followed and could have doubled his wages over the last 2 years (from £50k to £100k p.w) .

I suspect his agent has told him he will get a minimum of £200k a week if he sits on his hands. I also suspect that is why the Liverpool offer was reasonably low this summer as his agent was insisting on £200k wages. Over 5 years that's a big investment on top of the transfer fee.

Come January i suspect his agent will ask for £250k a week as he will know that will be possible if Marc was to leave on a free.

For this reason any offer we get for Marc will be on the low side. £20m max IMHO. Also, Marc is perfectly entitled to turn a move down.

If we don't sign Guehi's replacement in early January that really will be criminal.

He's not going to stay with all these top clubs after him so the only question is does he go in January or the summer.

Either way we need to get his replacement in now.

I think that is a good summary but Marc may also take into account the opportunities for silverware this season.
However, little will be determined by the end of January. The Carabao Cup finalists will be set but we already know that both Palace and Liverpool cannot contest it as they meet in the next round. The 24th round of the PL is played on the 31st January so there is still a big chunk of the season to go. It is hard to see that Liverpool would be definitely out of the race at that stage - but you never know with their defensive issues. The 3rd round of the FA Cup will have been played
In Europe, the 9-24 knockout round will not have been played so both Liverpool and Palace are still likely to be in contention in their competitions but with many rounds still to play

Am I the only one who thinks Guehi has stitched us up! Yes he has put in a shift for the team this season but maybe that was because he is in the shop window for the world’s biggest teams to see. People tend to forget that in the 24/25 season, after returning from the Euros, he was well below par with yellow cards, a sending off and own goals. His constant refusal to play the ball forward putting the responsibility to Lacroix and Henderson sent me mental. Yet despite this the Club, manager and fans have given him plenty of slack with an absence of criticism and a guaranteed place each week. This has allowed him to hone his defensive skills, much under the guidance of Roy (Mr Defensiveness) Hodgson, to earn England caps and his put his name on the world stage. We paid Chelsea and agents fees approximately £20m, wages of over £13m and will need to spend another £20-30m to replace him with someone nowhere near as good. What does he do …. he walks out for more money. Honourable?

Michael Olise was in the same position with his contract running down and a release clause of £35m despite his value being estimated £70-£80m. He signed a new contract with a £60m release clause and the big clubs came running in. Palace and Bayern agreed £50m plus £5m add-ons to ensure he doesn’t play in the Premiership against us and Reading get a sell on fee to help with their perilous financial situation. If he is sold for anywhere near the £120m fee Palace will get a hefty sell-on fee. Why couldn’t Guehi do something similar?

I hope he doesn’t come on TV at some stage in the future saying how much he loves Palace!

I have to agree with this assessment. A journeyman player seeking a pension top up with his last contract, yeah I can see that but how much money does a person want/need. If he isn't set for life, moneywise, already then he must have wasted a bus load of cash! If he signed an extension like Olise did and then moved on he would still get an obscene signing on fee and mega wages for 3/4/5 years. He has FA Cup and Community Shield medals, more than many excellent players have achieved so he has no need to trophy hunt. He is a good player, a much better player for being here!
Not a very moral action in my book but then football ain't a particularly moral environment. I can only comment from a supporters viewpoint and I'm not expecting much support for my opinion as clubs are not always paragons of virtue either.

We were talking about this earlier today.
Which one of us wouldn’t look after ourselves first. Come on be honest !

You sign a contract. You see out your contract. It’s nonsense to suggest Marc has done anything wrong. He believes he can do better for himself elsewhere in terms of money and the likelihood of more trophies than he can win at Palace - I’m sure he’s right. Good luck to him.

I totally disagree with the criticism of MG above.
The club had £60m on the table from Newcastle knowing he had one year left and they refused the offer.
They ran it down to £35m this year and turned that down.
MG has been honourable. The only person to criticise is Parrish and his scouting system and his fellow shareholders who refuse to invest.

I think that was both of them wasn't it? Neither he or the club wanted that deal.

That changes when you consider Guehi didn't want to go to Newcastle. He was holding out for Liverpool.

sorry but do you expect to just move wherever we dictate? That sounds like the world years ago. Marc has always give his best to the shirt and good luck to him whatever he decides

Especially given how long we have known that he wasnt going to sign an extension - it was common knowledge throughout pretty much the whole of last season.

Think he is gonna end up at Real Madrid. He dodged a bullet in the end by not joining Liverpool.

If he goes there, or anywhere, all the best to him, he’ll always be a legendary captain and player for us, he’s a large part of getting us to the level we are now at and he deserves his next chapter if it’s what he wants. We’ll be okay too, most important was getting this one last season especially the first few months.

Do we think there is any small chance he ends up signing an extension to stay put? If we look like going deep in 1, 2, or 3 cups, and keep up the good form in the league?
