Good old EU

Yes, the EU is a price-rigging, protectionist racket.

Both German and French economies are struggling, politically France is all over the place. Never been so ungovernable in the 5th Republics history with far right looking stronger than ever.

If Le Pen* wins the French Parliament, the losing side will refuse to accept the democratic decision of the Nation. The whole country will be a sh1.tshow.......or a Merde-show.

*or any Right Wing government.

Some types have already shown themselves to be highly undemocratic. Only accepting a consensus when it goes their own way.

Am thinking this is about using steel tariffs as a negotiating chip for something else. It's a big bargaining play by the EU. Maybe they want the UK to totally abandon defending our borders.

Well sod you EU. We've already done that 👍

Odd how some over here were happy for Labour to theoretically form a coalition with the Scots and Greens and Lib Dems as this was "democratic" yet squealed like pigs when the Tories did that with the UUP under May.

Coalition governments are great just as long as they support your views.

Yes, meanwhile, back on topic.

The problem is China. Again. Flooding the planet with cheap steel causing over-supply and pressing the EU to have to impose quotas on imports to protect their market.

7% of our steel goes to the USA so the Trump tariffs are significant. But almost all of our exports go to the EU. This is potentially devastating to our economy.

Of course, they will impose protection against China. But they have to impose quotas on other countries too.

Despite the bilious comments of many of our countrymen (such as who post on here), the EU knows that we remain very close allies and a critical contact for EU trade. We need to sit down with them to make sure we are not one of the exporters they cull. That they pick on other countries who are of less strategic value to them.

It may not happen.

Both sides protest about things that they do at the drop of a hat ,an adversarial system.Perhaps we should go for a Tweedledee and Tweedledum system where we fight like cats and then have tea.

The French police and army will support the right.

I thought we were more precision engineered steel rather than mass produced?

Why? If China are the real villains here then just put sanctions against them, don't drag us into their problem.

Precisely the argument we will sit down and make.

However, China are not the China of our youth. They can genuinely hurt the EU, trade-wise.

As with all things, very complex.

We will very likely be able to negotiate exceptions. The EU won’t want our steel industry to collapse any more than we do, especially at the moment.

If ever there was proof that Brexit was a mega stupid idea then this is it! We need to be inside the EU as part of a major block and not isolated on our own swimming in a sea full of sharks.

Way too much federalism surely??

More complicated targeting trade sanctions on induvidual nations. They are interested in their own ecomony. Same as we are only concerned with ours. We aren't in the EU so get lumped into the rest of world category. We are not as significant to EU trade as they are to us. Also looking forward to the biometric and background checks we have to go through being phased in starting this weekend. Hopefully won't be too much if a pain in the arse. Not got any convictions yet, so should be okay for a visit to Strasbourg.

No.

A federal Europe as a totality isn’t, and never was, on the cards. Some countries may merge certain aspects but that’s for them, not the EU. We would never have agreed to just submit to a centralised government, and wouldn’t if we reentered. We might cooperate on some aspects if to do so improves efficiency and delivers benefits.

It already is. Very happy we're out
