Goals conceded comparison

Just a little stat I've noticed. We've conceded as many goals in the first 4 games this season as we did in the first 14 games last season.

I find this extremely worrying.

I know it's early days and four games is a very small sample size, but that's still a hell of a difference. Last season we looked defensively solid and difficult to break down. This season we're shipping goals far too easily.

And it's not as if we're being unlucky either, some of the defending has been genuinely poor. On another day Ipswich could have scored 5 or 6 today, and Fulham last week could have quite easily scored another 2 or 3!

Hopefully it's just a blip and we tighten things up quickly, but if this continues, we're going to have a serious problem come the end of the season

Something definitely doesn't look right at the back. How is Sage going to tighten things up?

It's a problem that stretches back to last season. Apparently We've conceded 2 or more goals in ten consecutive PL games now. An inevitable by-product of selling players of the calibre of Guehi and Lacroix and not replacing them properly.

I genuinely do not know our best defence now. Have complete confidence in the wing backs but the CBs? Disasi is brought in for his leadership and immediately gets a ridiculous straight red. Richards seems a mile off his previous self. Canvot has all the potential but needs experience around him. Tomiyasu is liable to be injured. The other Chelsea lad seems decent but very young.

I'm almost inclined to think we should revert to two at the back and add another midfielder to try and protect them.

What is certain is that if Sage doesn't get a settled defence and stops leaking so many goals, we're going to be punished over and over again.

The job of the manager is to sort this out. It isn’t easy but also clear his tactics are a big part of the problem. Attempting to play a high press without the players to do it and when that is generally an unsuccessful tactic in the Premier League. Only really Liverpool under Klopp did it well and we do not have a Salah and Mane.

This is the worst defensive team we’ve seen at Palace in many years. If Sage doesn’t get and handle on it immediately his days with us our numbered

I'm predicting many many 3.2, 3.3, 4.3 and 5.4s this season.. . . . It's already clear will have to go gung ho and attempt to try and out score every opponent while shipping in a ton of goals!

Totally agree with your assessment of the defenders - I see this as a symptom and not a cause. The cause seems to be the midfield getting bypassed way too easily and way too often.

Richards was rolled at Fulham way up the pitch and they scored.
Disasi was charging around on the half way line and makes contact with the Ipswich player leading to the red.

So there is a pattern of center backs being pulled way out of position - in my eyes due to the midfield being bypassed and pressed high. There are also themes of way too many touches by the opposition in our box and way too many crosses coming in - again in my eyes due to lack of pressure on the ball in the middle third. We are just too easy to play against right now even though we do look lively going forward.

My eyes watered when I read that even against Middlesbrough when we won 3-0 (and yes I know there were wholesale changes on both teams before anyone says) the opponents had over fifty touches in our penalty area.

I did not see the game live to know if this is a statistical error but possession of 40% plus this sort of stat shows whatever posession based style of play we are aiming at did not work in that game. It is not yet working in the league either.

"Good morning, Dr.Dyches Football Consultants, how can I direct your call?"
"Ah, yes, hello, I've got a problem with my defence, it's leaking quite heavily"
"Have you made any recent changes or alterations?"
"Err yes, yes I have"
"Patching you through now"
