Glasner is worried - and so am I !

Parish has done too well and now it's a problem

Let me expand.

When we were promoted he asked the fans to raise their expectations, to not just see us as one of those yo yo clubs flitting between the Championship and the Premier League.
Let's face it, not many of us thought we would have 13 consectutive years in the Premier League.
The quality of the squad has also improved dramatically.

So far so good.

We then win the first major trophy and enter into Europe for the first time in our history with a top manager who is also very ambitious.
And that success brings problems.
Our best player are coveted (and taken) by other clubs , we can't fund the purchase of their equivalents, we continue to play in a small stadium with limited opportunities to grow revenue.

I'm as disappointed by this window as anyone, but the realist in me recognises we are at our glass ceiling and I suspect Parish realises that too.
If that’s the case then he and the American charlatans need to walk away and let someone prepared to invest step in.

I agreed with everything until this last point, after the cup final Parish said this takes us to the next level.
In the past Parish has said being a top 10 club and breaching 50 points was the aim. In 24 we scraped 10th on the last day, last season we managed 53 points which the season before would have been good enough for 9th.
There is still a little room until we hit the ceiling, as last season has shown Palace can have a first team that can challenge the big cliubs on their day maybe with a little bit of luck. However, a squad is required to challenge over the season, something that is beyond our resources.
My suggestion would be that instead of 12th, hopefully 11th and maybe scrape 10th, our aim should be 10th hopefully 9th and maybe scrape 8th. However, I would add to that as becoming a cup team. The last 16 should not be good enough, a team looking to finish in the top 10 in the Premier league should be aiming for at least one quarter final every season. Would aiming for two semi finals every five years be unreasonable?

In general what you say there is right , we will have a glass ceiling, and maybe we are close to it. But right now it feels like we could be crashing through the floor.
Yes I know a lot could happen in a week ,and maybe it will, I certainly hope so .
We were always in need of at least a couple added, with Eze, and Guehi, going , the team still has some good components , but those two could be seen as its heart. And no real sign of any incomings let alone four. If they do come it always takes time to integrate some longer than others. The situation we have was always highly likely , yet nothing about this looks planned, and maybe that’s the biggest reason to worry. No wonder Glasner is worried

Funny how we've hit a glass ceiling yet several teams have or continue to splash the cash. Giants like Bournemouth and Forest. I don't know why we're so accepting that Marinakis can put 100s of millions in but our owners can't.
We don't even need to mention Chelsea etc. Teams not even as big as us are putting far more money in.
I wouldn't hold my breath for much on deadline day and get the feeling anyone we buy will be used by necessity rather than anything else.
We have to expect an injury or two soon enough, frankly.

This today from Martin Samuel in the Sunday Times:

A Palace abdication?

“The king is dead, long live the king,” was Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish’s response to questions about Eberechi Eze last week. What king? Palace haven’t got a king. Palace are rapidly running out of players, let alone kings, if Marc Guéhi now goes to Liverpool. Flippant remarks about succession would be fine if, as Eze departed through one door, a replacement of similar stature was entering through another.

Yet there is no sign of that, to here, and the Palace manager, Oliver Glasner, was making dark jokes about needing to put his boots on if Guéhi goes. Glasner was a centre half. He played his last game for SV Ried in 2011. So between the quips and soundbites is a club in desperate need. It is not enough for Parish to ask the fans to get behind a monarch they cannot see. Not only are there no clothes, there’s no bloody emperor.

Sums it all as usual by this top sports journalist.

Whatever happens in the next few days in the transfer window Glasner will be gone.
Let’s face it he has worked miracles with a threadbare squad last season.
Glasner has shown his capabilities at 3 clubs now so deserves a shot at one of the Bigger teams & try & win the Champions League.
If Parish had not pissed around with UEFA & just listened to Glasner we may have kept him a tad longer.
Parish needs to decide if we are going to stagnate, which we do every year apart from last season or reach for the next level.
I believe If the next level is the goal Parish is not the man for the job & needs to retire gracefully & receive the rightful praise for keeping us in the Division & winning 2 trophies.
This transfer window has been an absolute joke!
Bring back Freedman.
Personally I think we reached the next level by winning the FA Cup and Charity Shield? I think clubs like ours may flirt occasionally with a higher finish but I can’t see us going any further. We should enjoy this time (which could be a few seasons more) as I can only see us going back to the Championship one day? This has been a great time to be a Palace supporter and let’s hope it continues but let’s be realistic we have to sell our best players to survive. It’s the hold the top teams have over us and that’s not going to change. Villa and Newcastle are more stabilised than us but are struggling with PSR to be able to join the top 6 clubs?

We've got Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea, Newcastle, Villa ahead of us in the pecking order (I know we finished ahead of Spurs last season).

I don't see us catching these clubs .

Everton are now in a new stadium and are investing heavily as well as traditionally being a big club.

We are in that section competing with the likes of Brighton, Forest and Fulham and those first two are showing more ambition than us.

I read somewhere that Parish never wanted to lose more than one key player per season and contracts were staggered for key players in this regard .
Notwithstanding this, we could well be losing two key players this summer.

If one accepts that our model is act as a stepping stone for talent, it is difficult to see how sustainable success can be achieved as when the players are 'pinched' you're into another cycle.

Southampton and West Ham have tried to operate by selling their great players and reinvesting, but ultimately it hasn't worked.
Can anybody name a club that has achieved sustained success using this model?

Hence, while we may threaten the top clubs on occasion and have the occasional cup run, I don't think we'll break through the glass ceiling operating as we currently do.

I think we’ve hit a glass ceiling due in part to the size of our stadium/fan base and also in relation to PSR rules. There are rules around losses over a three year period and Parish will know and be factoring in where we are with that. Conceivably the Textor factor has had some impact as we don’t know what happened there in detail. The board members can’t simply chuck money at it without breaking the rules . It’s why Sandcastle haven’t been able to break the top 6 monopoly by spending Arab money. Losing out on the Europa income is a factor and Parish had to fight that one to try to maximise our income. Those supposed planned signings agreed with Ollie were probably on the basis we would be in the Europa.
In terms of big signings there are also rules about wages as a percentage of revenue and our revenue is not high so we can easily be outbid by bigger clubs in that score.
Parish had to sell before he could buy for these reasons and of course he’s desperate to sell Guehi to help the finances. I expect signings this week but a £40 million player on a big salary seems unlikely.
As Parish has said in past interviews, for this club to progress further the priority is a new stand. I don’t know how that development impacts on PSR spending but I’m pretty sure the Board does. Glasner will be aware of all of this and it’s not good news for him but since he has no plan to stay long term, he’ll have to suck it up and work with whatever squad we have by the end of this week.

i wonder how impactful losing Freedman is proving to be. Incredible signings brought in, often in a timely manner.

The fact that we haven't got people through the door when it was extremely likely we'd lose 2 of our best players is very poor. Sure, Parish has had a lot on his plate, but that's why you're in charge!

If this isn't sorted pronto we risk losing OG, and he would be the worst person to lose.

It's like 92/93 all over again. Sell our best player (Ian Wright) to Arsenal, scrabble around for a replacement, sign Gabbiadini who looked great for Sunderland but was bobbins for us, and then play Arsenal last game of the season. Who relegate us (and of course Wright scored).

Parish has done so much for us in the last 15 years, but it doesn't feel like he's on top of the situation at present.

Parish said we should look to get to the next level. Problem was, no-one asked him which direction he was facing
