Free Speech

Many of the threads here are either based, or touch, on, the very different interpretations that people put on what is meant by free speech and how, or if, it must ever be regulated or restricted.

These different interpretations lie at the base of the ever widening divisions that are splitting our society in two and threatening its future. Interpretations that are being spread through social media and exploited by adversaries who seek the weakening of the west.

This has come to the fore in the recent past with events such as Charlie Kirk’s murder putting them fully under a spotlight.

I read two very different articles today which highlight this issue. The first from the unapologetic Christian Nationalist Andrew Torba of Gab. You won’t be surprised at who he blames or what his solution is. The second is from Nick Robinson of the BBC, which is rather more reflective and objective. I find the contrast interesting, informative, disturbing and extremely worrying. Do you?

No comments at all!

Somehow I am not surprised, given it was me that started the thread but as this subject seems to exercise people here more than any other it is nevertheless disappointing that no one at all has anything to say about the two, very different, articles I linked to.

Perhaps people aren’t actually so interested unless they want to have a moan about words they approve being restricted, or words they disapprove of being heard.

I think it’s a very important subject in the context of today’s fevered politics. Nick Robinson’s being an especially valuable and thought provoking piece, whatever your personal politics. Andrew Torba’s being the opposite. It’s unbalanced and extremely disturbing.
