Ex-Reform Party politician took Russian Bribes.

Ok, I’ll leave it there as it’s as close to an apology as I am likely to get. For that I thank you.

There's no apology as none is required, you perceived something that wasn't intended that I could have written better.

That's all it is.

Your request for accuracy or clarity was valid and thus you received it.

Kind of an unfortunate detour away from the topic.

According to the Times, external, Reform UK is investigating whether it underpaid value-added tax (VAT) after experts said the party might have broken the law and could face a fine. Political parties are required to pay VAT on certain types of income over the value of £90,000 a year. The Times' sources believe the threshold was exceeded due to ticket sales from Reform's party conference. Just what we need a dodgy Party that doesn't pay its taxes. The Del Boys of politics,"anyone wanna watch?"

It sounds like a mistake more than anything sinister. So yes put that in the negative column for Reform as long as you remember that Labour (Raynor) and the Tories have been making these mistakes since they came into existence.

If anything it shows up again the unnecessary complications of our tax systen which should be simplified for all.

Let's face it when the Chancellor of the Exchequer has to employ an accountant to do her own personal taxes well what chance have the rest of us.

She probably did this as it is a time consuming process and she is reaonably well paid. As for your first point I would not disagree that it is a mistake and we all (even political parties) make them. My interest is where does it go from here? Lastly,The tax system has always been overly complex as the Government does not want you to know how much you are being fleeced.

Agreed.

Our tax system is over complicated because it suits the government and civil service and I am sure accountants just love them.

It is however a huge cost on our economy and stifles growth. To be clear I am not referring to the overall burden of tax which is a different argument.

My first school lesson in Economics was Tax should be fair and simple to collect. Apparently that lesson has not been learnt by successive governments of all shades. I expect in the upcoming budget Rachel will further complicate it by doing everything but the obvious which is to raise income tax.

A Chancellor with vision could have a tax neutral budget and make a bonfire of all of the absurdities and just raise the lost revenue on a combination of income tax and corporation tax or VAT (my pet hate). This could really kickstart the economy but it "aint going to appen".

I think the budget will increase taxes and reduce tax breaks that are not instantly noticeable, online gambling is a favourite and reduction in the upper tax break (all at 20%) on A.V.Cs will be abolished. As with all budgets there will be an eye catching sweetner it has been a removing of social levy charges on energy which would lower bills by circa £300. As with all predictions something completely different will happen! After the press mauling Reeves will be much craftier than her initial efforts.

I have no problem with hitting online gambling, it employs very few people in the UK. Hitting the racing industry could lead to thousands of job losses.

300 off the bills was prmised pre election and bills of course went up.

I have no confidence in anything less damaging than the last budget, we shall see

If you want a chuckle watch Reeves' C4 interview

All the online gambling companies are based in lax tax havens. Like Malta and Gibraltar for example. I'm not sure there's any way to tax them.

Why do you hate VAT? I have always thought it represents the fairest way to raise tax, so will be interested to learn why others disagree and what would have to be raised to replace it.

It’s not just gambling though is it? It’s all online commerce. How do we tax it successfully? When physical goods cross borders it ought to be easy but the sheer volume of small purchases, from the likes of Shein and Temu, makes the admin involved result in it being exempted.

Tax ought to be paid wherever a good or a service is used and paid for, not where it is invoiced from. That, by the way, applies just as much to social media platforms and other internet suppliers as those businesses who use them.

Finding a way to monitor and tax all this activity ought not be impossible in today’s world. Finding international agreement on it and imposing it will be much harder.

Actually there is. Change the licencing laws.

Only grant gambling licences for companies that are registered and pay tax in the UK. You can further add that said companies must pay X into a fund that supports horse racing / gambling addiction etc. Any companies that refuse block their websites.

If you flog t-shirt with vote Nige there's going to be VAT to pay so not just tickets.

Yawn!

We should do a thread of the desperate smears aimed at Reform over the next 4 years.

It's a most amusing notion that Reform is a threat to national security when the two main parties have left our borders open to just about anyone who wants to enter the country.

Agreed i'm sure someone on the left will 👍

Ten and a half years clink.

Blimey.......

😎
If you listen to what he did it’s hardly surprising!

I heard a documentary about this guy recently. He was also a Church pastor who recruited many members for UKIP/Brexit/Reform and was very close to Farage. He has also had a long association with far right politics going back many years.

The investigation that exposed his activities is continuing and others are said to be likely to also be facing charges. It’s not known who they are.
